How do you handle friends with fundamental differences regarding morality?

There is a coworker who I enjoy conversing with from time to time who is heavily involved in a support group for Planned Parenthood. Every time she talks about her organization's endeavors I always find myself attempting to redirect the conversation.
Meanwhile, my girlfriend is more or less a self-professed atheist, so I have learned how to deal with our spiritual/religious differences. It seems like as long as you respect each others opinions and make sure to consider the viewpoints of others then you can usually operate in harmony.
However, I remember struggling mightily to get over this matter when we first started seeing each other.
Have your friendships or relationships ever been impacted by someone's views on these ever-polarizing subject matters (e.g. abortion, gay marriage, religion, etc.)?

I doubt I could marry someone who was opposite from me on major issues, but if you're talking just friends? Doesn't really matter...they're people you hang out with and enjoy spending time in their company. Who cares if they have different views

I agree with this statement but I couldn't be in a relationship with an atheist. That is too big of a fundamental difference for a true relationship. If y'all are just young and banging I get it and I could do that, (if she dressed up like satan sometimes) but I could never have a serious relationship with her.

I avoid these discussions wherever possible. Nothing good comes of them. Nobody's mind ever gets changed, and it just causes needless conflict.

This. But I also require people to have a modicum of thought into their positions for me to have any sort of respect for them. This is rarely a problem though, b.c in general I am not friends with idiots.
I will say that I have a relative that doesn't believe in Evolution. And I have very little respect for them due to this. I just don't see how anyone could deny evolution. It would be like saying - the sky is purple or something like that.

friends are easy
as long as they are respectful of my beliefs, I'll be respectful of theirs
family is generally a bit trickier, and I usually just try to avoid those conversations altogether since I'm in the minority with my beliefs among my family

I'm a very opinionated person. I've found that I like to discuss and debate my beliefs with coworkers and acquaintances. In general, I like people who have well thought out reasons for doing and believing things. I may not always agree, and sometimes I will be frustrated, but there is always a mutual respect there after having real discussion.
The fake people are the ones I can't stand. The ones who say they love Jesus and don't go to church and are always sleeping around. And the lazy atheist with just embarrassingly awful reasons for not believing in God.

It's a little more serious than that, but I guess it helps that neither of us intend to get married or raise children within the next five years.
To be fair, she also toes the line as a Buddhist and we share some mutual views regarding Eastern philosophy.

My wife once told me that dinosaurs were fake. I tended to look over that since she was letting me do nasty things to her.

I only converse with people who share the same views as me. It's much easier this way.
