My experience with this “family “ statement at work is that the actual culture is the direct opposite. That works well when you’re “in” the family or spouting some mission or culture statement on a website. Buyer beware.

Sounds good, but my company doesn't treat employees like family

Places that do this usually don’t pay well, don’t grant pto requests, blatantly play favoritism/nepotism, and will lay you off/fire you at the drop of a hat.

If they have to constantly tell you, it’s because they’re lying.

I don't keep anything family related in my office in case I ever want to leave. I trade you my time for your money. Neither of us would be here if we had the money to not be.

I work for money, not teams or family. If I make friends along the way, thats fine, but I'm also good if I don't

Family is a bit much, but I'm very big into team work atmospheres so I enjoy it. I was honestly at my happiest when I ran a Cane's kitchen, but tough to get paid doing that ha.

It's applicable in some job situations and, at best, bullshite propaganda at others.

The only time this is applicable and hasn't been an absolute crock of shite was when I worked in the public sector.

When the tax payers pay your salary, you really are a "family".

Also helps that there's no customers and your workforce is just taking care of one another (in my case, IT).

Best case scenario they mean it and that means they are flexible when it comes to sick kids and ahit like that. (My current employer is very cool about family stuff)

Worst case scenario then mean they expect unconditional loyalty and for you to work like you’re in a family business without actual ownership.

my company doesn't use corny slogans and rah rah bs like that but the camaraderie among guys that I work with and have known for decades is family like, everyone is there for everyone else and their families and step up to help each other in times of need and celebrate when times are good

No problem with the team mantra or business promoting the teamwork attitude

Nothing worse than employees that refuse to contribute to a common goal or mission but rather work against it for their own good.

I had several like this and I’d catch them undermined others, pointing fingers, throwing people under the bus and badmouthing management to outsiders.

They were only looking out for themselves.

I have no problem with people finding faults but be productive about it- offer solutions. Bring something to the table beside a bag of attitude and complaints

When I would answer the phone and a Co-worker started off with the "team" shite I would interrupt them with "Okay knock it off, what did you eff up now and what do you want me to do about it"...
There was so much backstabbing going on and the female boss promoted it made the "family" thing laughable.. She even had a brilliant idea of taking people out to lunch for their birthday... No one took her up on that offer.

I hate it and I wish it would go away.

What I really hate is the trend towards "showing vulnerability" by sharing deeply personal stories with people you've never met. Its showing up in all the management training over the past 2 years and its miserable. Its making me reconsider my career path in people managing. That stuff is not appropriate to share with coworkers who aren't dear personal friends IMO, and I dont want to hear it.

My experience is that if you focus time and energy on employees, things usually will work out. The cringy buzzwords and slogans are transparent. Employees smell a fake. But if you pay well, staff appropriately, and train employees adequately, the company won't need the corporate types to develop programs to motivate the employees.

I normally give family heads up about changes

My company shoots us an email on friday afternoons about changes after they’ve happened.

Team and family my arse. Its typical corporate speak, so its whatever. Buying the bs they sell says more about my coworker to me than it does about the people saying it.

This is weird, and I would either lie, or use professional/hobby situations.

Exactly! I don't know about anyone else's family but my family has never fired a member without forewarning. We've never "downsized" or run one of the members for underperforming either.
