Trust must be earned.

Not trusting a stranger isn’t being rude or a Dick, it’s being intelligent, and careful.

Being Nice is to be polite and well mannered. It’s not being aggressive towards anyone unless provoked.

Being nice isn’t letting people take advantage of you. That’s being stupid.

Being nice is being truthful. If you start dating a girl, and then realize you don’t have feelings for her, be a Man and be upfront and honest with her about your feelings and allow both of you to move on to meet people better suited for your lives.

I agree. I'm not even really an a-hole to people walking up to me. I'm just curt and short and don't engage their small talk or shake their outstretched hand. I'm perfectly nice and kind to cashiers and anyone doing their job.

You don't get any respect because you're a druggie, chasing any substance you can that will alter your sad life without popping you on a drug test.

Start there.

I tried that when I was younger. It doesn't work well. I wound up making everyone think I was a fricking moron and then completely amazed when I didn't fail at life.

Be true to yourself. frick putting others first unless they would do the same.
Don't be the nice guy always. You'll be stepped on.
And always be direct. Nice guys finish last. But it's often because they don't articulate what they really want. Try and play a nice guy role as a way to get in the door and that never works in the end.
You'll notice assholes get what they want. So you need to balance that. Don't be a jerk but don't be a doormat.

I believe in being a good person and helping others but you have to back off/draw the line when you are being taken advantage of.

Always be on high alert for that because to be honest, most people are very selfish human beings.

I don't know about that that. There was a guy I worked with. Ex Navy. Good at bringing in defense business, but absolutely nobody liked working with him because he was a dick to people.

When it came time to make cuts, each director had to make cuts in their department. He got cut. I didn't. My director confided that even though the guy had good numbers, he was poison in the system.

He went on to file an age discrimination suit, but at the time, I was 65 and he was 62. Plus, the company had staff that were in their 70's and also, a couple in their early 80's. His lawsuit was dismissed as baseless.

You can be kind, gracious and just without being trampled on. As noted “niceness” isn’t really a virtue.

So called “nice guys” are usually not nice… they are manipulative

If you have to tell people you are nice, you probably aren’t.
