No. People see an ad that Bananas are on sale this week for $0.49/lb and take that “savings” and decide to shop at that store this week, and buy other goods that have better margins.
They’re also always by the entrance. First item you see is on sale and you get hooked into buying more.

That and supplier-funded markdowns

It's an item that a company is willing to take a profit loss on in order to get people to come in and buy other things that they will make a higher margin on.
Didn't know stores targetted monkeys. Who else would base their decision to shop at a particular store because they sell cheap-arse bananas?
Now, you sell pineapples or blueberries cheap as frick...I'm in on that shite. Those frickers are expensive!
ETA: even with Golfer's above post, it still makes no sense to me. Bananas are cheap as frick anyway. Unless you are buying a metric frick ton, who cares what price they are?

That too. Dole says “we’ll cover your costs on the banana markdowns if you sell our canned peaches for $1.99 vs. $1.79

I get irrationally angry when a store has no green bananas available. I like to go to the store once a week, a few green ones would be nice.

Lost leader.
What’s this?
Loss leader is an item priced below cost to get folks in the store, where they will likely buy other items that do make a profit.
The strategy makes the old supply and demand model look stupid sometimes.
For example, demand for charcoal is highest on big holidays like the 4th, Memorial Day, and Labor Day, yet those are the days when it is priced the cheapest.
Turkey at Thanksgiving is another one. Cheapest time to buy is when demand is highest, but merchants do it to get you in and sell you other profitable items.

Many of the US bananas used to come through New Orleans Port. Now they come into Biloxi and they go into gas houses to ripen.

Which is why they are useful as a loss leader. They're more valuable to the store as an advertisement than a profit generator.

no one goes to a store for bananas and just buys bananas.
I dont really dont understand why they are so cheap though. They could charge double and it would still be reasonable.
I dont remember his name (something Z) but there was that guy from NO or Mobile in 1800s who made millions on importing bananas. Considering they cost so little, the markup cant be much, how the hell do you become so wealthy from bananas?

There’s thousands of studies out there about this type of stuff and how it affects the behavior of the consumer once they are in the store.
You see how cheap bananas are and think you’re getting a deal. So as you move through the store you believe you’re getting the best price on everything else.

Del Monte brings their banana boats into Galveston as well. And they carry a lot more than bananas. Went on one about a month ago and BS'd with the Indian officers

If you're an oblivious idiot maybe. I sure as frick don't look at that $4.99/lb ground meat and think I'm getting a good deal.
Now, 10 lbs of leg quarters for $3.50...now we're talking deals.

You can't do it in your home freezer but vodka can be frozen.

You're thinking of Sam "The Banana Man" Zemurray and United Fruit Company. They practically owned Nicaragua and a few other "Banana Republics" back in the day. That giant white house at the upstream corner of St Charles Ave and Audubon Place was Zemurray's home and is now the President of Tulane's residence. Selling bananas at a loss didn't pay for that place.
I'm not sure what Marketing 101 taught the OT about loss leaders, but there was, and still is, money in bananas. The market has certainly changed over the past 100 years, but it's still profitable. Dole and Chiquita aren't importing LITERAL boatloads of bananas to lose money on them.
