Dole and Chiquita aren't importing LITERAL boatloads of bananas to lose money on them.

Right. It's the retailer that takes the loss with loss leaders.

The importing of bananas also brought to us fire ants.

Thanks.

Bananas built the Tulane's president's house.

Well, that and a couple Central American coups.

Everything at Costco is a loss leader. Costco's profit = membership dues

I'm not sure what Marketing 101 taught the OT about loss leaders, but there was, and still is, money in bananas. The market has certainly changed over the past 100 years, but it's still profitable. Dole and Chiquita aren't importing LITERAL boatloads of bananas to lose money on them

This has no bearing on what Walmart sells for.

Not sure what “supply chain 101” taught you.

You see how cheap bananas are and think you’re getting a deal. So as you move through the store you believe you’re getting the best price on everything else.

Yes. It's basically all built on consumer stupidity. But it works.

Let you know what happens when you try to freeze vodka?

It freezes, that's what happens.
-16.51 degrees and it's a block of ice.

..and air solidifies like any other gasses when frozen...

Generally speaking, WalMart isn't in the business of using loss leaders to attract shoppers. Black Friday sales are the primary exception.

WalMart is all about high volume sales stimulated by every day low pricing. Not bananas as a loss leader. Seriously? Has anybody every said, "I'm out of bananas. I think I'll run over to WalMart."? Not no, but frick no.

A true loss leader example would be be Winn-Dixie offering all Smithfield hams, butt or shank, for $5, with an additional $40 purchase the week of Christmas. They ADVERTISE the special to draw shoppers into the store, just like WalMart advertises discounted TVs for Black Friday. Everybody flocks to Winn-Dixie to get a cheap ham and then proceeds to do the rest of their grocery shopping while they're there. That's a loss leader.

Do you know what isn't a loss leader? Bananas that sell for near or the same price 52 weeks a year. But they're at the front of the store, you say. Damn right they're at the front of the store, because if you don't buy them soon, Winn-Dixie is going to has a shitload of brown bananas in a week.

I’ve read a lot about United Fruit and Sam Zemmurray. Zemurray actually got his start buying the almost spoiled bananas at the dock from the big players. He would buy them cheap and sell them local in a very short window. Went on to run United Fruit. They got away with a lot of stuff in Central America and Cuba.

Hawking brown/near brown bananas is how he got his nickname, Sam the Banana Man. He was quite the entrepreneur and a completely self made man. I think his parents were Russian immigrants.

Untied Fruit and Standard Fruit practically ran Central America for years. They got the US govt to send the USMC to Nicaragua when they were having problems with rebels.
