How do grocery stores make money on bananas?

They’re like 59 cents a pound and they must throw a shite ton away due to spoilage. I’d think shipping them in from the Caribbean or wherever would cost a lot.

I’m not complaining. An awesome fruit. Just froze a couple for my morning smoothie.

AmazonFresh has a big issue with Banana's. So Amazon on campus, created two community banana stands. Anyone can come buy and grab as many as you want.

They know they don't make money on bananas. They expect you to purchase other things to make up for it.

Loss leader is an item that sells for a loss or breaks even to get you in store for other shite
Gas at Costco is probably a loss leader.

People go to the store with the specific intent of buying bananas, and then then think, "oh shite, 'nanas are cheap, let me buy some other shite too"?

It's an item that a company is willing to take a profit loss on in order to get people to come in and buy other things that they will make a higher margin on.
You will typically see these during Christmas, specifically advertised as Doorbusters. TV's for $99.00, Beats headphones for $99.00, etc.
