Depends on the dog... My dog ate a whole bag of Hersey's kisses, she was fine. Just had to make sure she passed the foil, so I had to check her shite for the next three days.

Lindt truffles

Milk chocolate or dark?

Theobromine is a metabolite of caffeine and if you imagine what caffeine toxicity looks in a person, it's similar. Heart racing, rapid breathing, excessive thirst, panting, and vomiting (hopefully).

Not a vet, but almost lost a dog to chocolate about a year ago. She broke into our pantry when we weren't home and ate some bakers chocolate, 100% cocoa dark chocolate powder, and some chocolate chips. I still don't know how she survived, even with a trip to the LSU Vet Emergency Clinic. I think she vomited a lot of it up (had black throw up in multiple places.) But if we hadn't gone to the vet she would have died.

If your dog is acting abnormal, consider calling or visiting the vet. If they're acting normal just keep an eye on them. Also try to keep them calm and no physical activity until they're in the clear.

My lab ate a whole sleeve of Oreos Christmas Eve and was fine. She has an iron stomach though.

Yea, my Lab has eaten a ton of those little mini Reese cups in the duck hole, we share a Honey Bun every time we go.

Why even chance it ? There are so many other things you can feed man’s best friend that are 100% safe .

What?

My dog got ahold to some chocolate awhile back and I called the vet. The first thing she asked me was how much, when I told her she then suggested that I keep a close eye on him because it wasn't that much, but if he started throwing up, etc then bring him in. Some not all amounts of chocolate is equal. So maybe my advice should have been for him to call his vet.

I never said anything is wrong with peanut butter, that's what I used to give both of my crazy arse dogs their meds. Most dogs love the hell out of peanut butter. Again, I am not sure what you perceived my post to say.

Try this calculator. Depending on the dog's size and the size of the candies (regular or minis) you are looking at very mild to mild I think.

LINK

That calculator is also for 100% solid milk chocolate, which Reese's cups are not. A reeses cup contains about 20% chocolate to 80% peanut butter mix, so whatever results you get from that calculator you need to reduce by about 80%.

In short, your dog will be perfectly fine. May have the shits for the night, but probably won't even have that.

Source - have vets in family and have had multiple dogs eat chocolate

The absolute worst stuff for dogs to get into chocolate wise is cocoa powder. If the truffles are really dark or had cocoa powder on them. I would take them in, 5 Reese’s cups won’t do much because hersheys chocolate is garbage chocolate and doesn’t have high theobromine levels.

My grandma used to feed her dog Reese’s cups all the time. The dog lived about 7 years and was blind well before the end came.

True, I used the full weight as a worst case and even then it basically said just to keep an eye on the dog.

Also, as stated earlier, the type of chocolate matters. What we eat as chocolate barely has any real chocolate in it and is mostly sugar.

Now if you're talking DARK chocolate? Yeah better stay up and monitor well.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs.. but dont take my word for it, there are probably at least 5 million google results for ur query

Dark chocolate can be, milk chocolate is not. We had a dog eat every Christmas stocking in the house one year...probaly 150 hershey's kisses. Family was scared the fricker would die...emergency vet told us, after collecting $300, that the worst case would be some diarrhea. It would take a LOT of dark chocolate to hurt a dog...they eat shite thats been lying in the streets for weeks, drink out of overburdened septic tanks and lick their own arse having not had a bath in years...a little chocolate is nothing to such an animal...

My daschund ate an entire Halloween size bag of Reeces out of my son’s backpack and nothing happened. Weenie dogs are indestructible assholes though. He also fished a box of Popeye’s chicken bones. I stared at his shite for a week looking for blood with negative results. He made it 17 years and died peacefully. He was a loveable dick and did what he wanted to.

The whole chicken bone thing is so over blown it is ridiculous. We had a german shepherd when I was a kid that ate entire chickens regularly...bones, beaks and all....and that fricker never had an issue. My lab has eaten dozens of breasted out ducks, geese and pheasants and other than me kicking in her arse for making a mess she ain't ever had any ill side effects. A stray dog will eat anything they can find and can live many years if they are lucky. The damned things will drink out of back up toilet and go about their lives as if it is the most normal thing in the world....a chicken bone ain't hurting but one in a million.
