And I have no idea how that data is factoring in who is at fault. Did the cyclist turn out and was't look, or did the person crossing the street not check twice and they were at fault? I'm not going to blame that death on a 2024 model truck being 11% bigger than a 2000 model. I'm going to blame that on a person walking out in the street without looking.

We are getting way off topic with discussing pedestrian fatalies but there are many articles that point to the larger vehicles increasing fatalities as a pedestrian is run over with the larger vehicles.

Another reason for the recent spike in pedestrian deaths is fueled, in part, by a trend toward larger vehicles like SUVs or pickup trucks, experts believe. These heavier, taller vehicles are more likely to strike a pedestrian in the head or chest— rather than the legs — resulting in de

Larger are vehicles are generally unnecessary for the vast majority of people and many cannot afford them and the cars are bleeding them dry leaving no leftover money to save for retirment and emergencies.

Large vehicles are just a bad idea for a large portion of society. Is that nuanced enough?

My first house I would have to drive to my dad's and borrow his truck to go to home depot and get shite for my house.

I use the hell out of a truck. My wife uses every bit of her suburban. Even more now that we have 20 acres.

I’m on my third house and have never owned a truck. It’s been fine.

It appears to me that people generally don't give a crap that some people buy bikes and small cars. But it does appear that those small car/bike people only want others to buy small cars/SUVs/bikes and not buy what they want. What kinda crap is that?

To continue on with my broad generalizations ITT, your large truck owners by and large have disdain for and go out of their way to antagonize cyclists and pedestrians. Your large truck owners have not been on a bike or gone on a run since they were in middle school.

Your small car/SUV types tend to also be cyclists, runners, and pedestrians in an urban environment who are more aware and cognizant of the dangers of large vehicles.

This thread is pretty funny.

We've got a financially illiterate bicyclist and another guy that fantasizes about male genitalia both trying to dictate what the rest of us "should" drive.

I am a homeowner who has never owned a truck nor will ever own a truck and it has been fine.

The OT is the exception to all the data of course.

You're mistaken on two counts:

1. I never told anyone what they should or should not drive. I own stuff I don't need also. I just said something to a guy who said it would be o.k. if I said it (boy, was he lying), and I pointed out that what people collectively claim is the reason they "need" a truck is obviously false when the demand for a full size bed is basically nonexistent for regular sized trucks.

2. I'm not the one trying to buy something to compensate for the size of my penis. That would be the average American pickup truck driver.

There are plenty of baws out there obsessed with their genitalia, but I'm not one of them.

Buy an old car from 2000, spend $2k on tools, do the work yourself. You'll save $50k.

Sorry Bro, but you left out a few key things like parts (if you can get them) and time.

How do you fix a 1998 truck with 225,000 leaking oil, bad fuel pump, and iffy transmission and shot AC? You telling me you gonna pump 10-15K+ into this vehicle which has a blue book of 3-4K? basically get upside down on an really old vehicle instead of a new one? Plus if you have all the time to do these repairs and not actually use the vehicle, might question the need for the vehicle.

Quit being a twat. If people want trucks, it shouldn’t get your panties in a knot.

The whole thread is primarily people talking about why other people don't need the vehicle they drive.

The thread is also about frugality and cars, a subject I shouldn't really weigh in on. However, the vast majority of people that drives trucks are spending a lot more on basic transportation than they need to. It is a want thing. I rent an F250 with an 8ft bed 3-4 times a year to do the hauling I need being a surburbanite, honestly, I could borrow one but it is so cheap to rent them I don't bother inconveniencing my friends/family.

I have zero issues with people buying and driving vehicles that are far from need and well into the want category and IME the majority of people driving P/Us are firmly in the want. There is a large part of P/U drivers that think of sedans the same way many large SUV drivers think of minivans. Despite their actual needs they spend more money because they want one and find some stigma associated with the other.

Yet you associate the vehicle someone chooses to drive with their genitalia?

Yeah this is me. I owned a smaller truck for three years, but traded it in when I took a job that had me commuting a bunch and I couldn't stand the low mpg.
I have a 6 year old sedan that I am going to try to make last 10 years. I kind of want a truck, but the prices are stupid, so I will stick with my paid off Honda.

Agreed. Even if it wasn't my daily driver, I use a truck enough to buy a 15-20 yr old beater just to have at my disposal
