It's an incredibly narrow view of the value a truck provides to people.
Sure. I'm just providing a counterpoint and showing that there is research indicating that massive trucks are killing people and that pedestrian and cycling deaths are on the rise.
So yes the unnecessarily large trucks are harmful to the community.
The stuff I own that I don't need don't harm others in the same way that the bro-dozers do.
Stay mad and fat.

I can think of sooooo many instances where having a truck would have been better than my gay little car.
1. So what?
Are you telling me that you are the one out of a hundred who worked on a farm, needed to haul things frequently, needed to tow things frequently, etc.? If so, we're not in disagreement.
2. If what you're talking about is that you can remember 2-3 times a year that you moved a piece of furniture and needed a truck to do it, again, so what? There are 365 days in a year. You're going to base your choice on a vehicle on what would be better 2 of those days?
3. If the answer to either #1 and #2 is "yes," then I guess you should never have turned gay and bought a car. I can refer you to some great Conversion Therapy places.
4. The guy I was replying to said it was o.k. to say what I said.

You realize you're not going to win this discussion, yeah?
The main reason the average baw drives a truck is that it is a substitute for having a large penis or otherwise being manly. It's an alpha statement that can be bought instead of having to earn it.

I am well aware. I've fought this battle many times on the OT.
I'm a resident cyclist who is also a truck hater. Obtuse1 is a fellow cyclist who will fight the fatties on the OT.

Correct.

My oldest son and his wife tried to get me to loan them money for a down payment last year so that they could get a "safe SUV" for the baby they were expecting.
After prying it out of him, I discovered that they wanted to go way upside down on one of those giant Infinity SUVs.
I said hell no, but I would buy them a used Sequoia outright.
They declined and are still pouting about it.
That's an amazing story
This is America now and why there is only a tiny sliver of folks that are debt free.
Being debt free in a high inflation society is like getting a raise.

I can buy that.
But I don't know many people who fit that description.

The reasons for the rising death toll are complex, with many variables, including more driver distraction. But a growing body of research indicates that the increasing dimensions of pickups may be contributing to the deadliness of crashes, especially when one hits a person, cyclist, or smaller vehicle.
So you're probably the guy texting and driving that is for sure contributing to more people dying, but complaining that because trucks are !1% larger than they were 20 years ago MAY be contributing to more cyclist dying

Do you have the same issue with Tahoes and Expeditions that are the same size and sit on the same frame as the full size trucks? :

I paid for the towing package on my SUV so those rare times a year I "need" a pickup, I can borrow/rent a trailer for those purposes. I've also hauled small amounts of lumber in the SUV, well secured and flagged handing out the back.
I have had a 14' jb since the 90's I have towed with sedans all over the place, including long trips out of state. No truck needed. Just the hitch package and light harness.
Trucks are too limiting for my needs. Sure you have bed space, but cabin space and fuel economy and overall cost are my priorities.

I feel like these days you have to get an obnoxiously huge truck to have decent bed size.
Maybe my perception is off but midsize trucks appear to have TINY beds.

Why are you projecting? Why does data offend you?
I do not touch my phone while in the car. I have a tracking app for my insurance and I want to keep my premiums down.

Yep. I am a large vehicle hater. It just so happens that trucks keep getting comically larger and tend to be jacked up 10 feet off the ground.
Anything larger than a midsize SUV liek a Pilot, CRV, Tiguan is too large and unnecessary and not safe for pedestrian heavy urban life (which is where I happen to reside and thus has colored my perspective on the topic).

You are not mistaken at all, which is part of what I'm claiming, and it's not just midsize trucks.
If it was all about functionality, the truck consumer would be worried about bed size. Instead, the truck consumer is worried about bells, whistles, luxury interiors, passenger space, useless shite like automatic retracting running boards, etc.m etc., etc., and as a minor afterthought, "Oh yeah, the truck bed." Which they then take up 1/3 of with their tool box.
You end up with a 4 1/2 foot long bed by the time we have a back seat and a tool box.
Unless you get a giant deisel truck, modern trucks are just Poserhicles that can tow something the 2 times a year you need them to.
They are SUVs for an extra $15,000 so you can look and feel manlier.

It doesn't offend me. Your data told me nothing other than driver distraction is for sure killing more people and bigger trucks may be contributing to pedestrian deaths.

And I have no idea how that data is factoring in who is at fault. Did the cyclist turn out and was't look, or did the person crossing the street not check twice and they were at fault? I'm not going to blame that death on a 2024 model truck being 11% bigger than a 2000 model. I'm going to blame that on a person walking out in the street without looking.

Honestly, I ask this question all of the time. My household is two teachers. Gross, we make about $110k combined. I know people that do plant work that make $50-$60k with a stay at home wife that drive these trucks. I have a used Chevy Sonic. It gets me to work and back, has cold AC, and a decent stereo. I'd love a truck, but keeping mpg at a logical level and paying into retirement investments is more important to me.

While we are at it, add electric cars to the list. They way a ton and are going to lead to more horrific car crashes. They are also going to tear up the road.
Back on the original topic: I do think people spend way too much on cars. I think there are a lot of rich people who can afford nice new cars and then also a lot of people heavily leveraged.

Welcome to the United States! Believe it or not, it is a great place to live.
People can buy whatever they want and can afford to drive. You can even buy Pepsi if you want. Nobody cares.
It appears to me that people generally don't give a crap that some people buy bikes and small cars. But it does appear that those small car/bike people only want others to buy small cars/SUVs/bikes and not buy what they want. What kinda crap is that?

The wealthy people I know DD sedans and only use a truck when going fishing. A huge pickup truck makes a terrible daily driver.
