Water lines are 6 feet under ground.

deeper than the frost line. Chicago services are deeper than 42". but sometimes you get lucky and drill through one at 30".

That unfinished basement in That 70’s Show wasn’t just part of the set.

Most every house up there has a big unfinished basement.

shite the people I know up north all look at me like I'm crazy if I mention an attic. I didn't think they even really did attics up there.

Closer to the Yellowstone Caldera. The ground is warmer.

Cause you don't run water lines in attics, even insulated. Water falls downhill.

Idk but my house is on a slab, everything freezes up here, never my water pipes, not even a issue, I guess it’s the insulation.

Crawlspace/basement vs slab built houses is a big reason.

I've never owned one of these, and I never will.

Water departments there, in all seasons but summer, heat, then pipe nothing but hot water. Most homes receive the hot water and then cool it. They don't utilize water heaters. It's just a climate zone thing.

The unfinished part of my basement is hot as hell. I also turn off the water to the outside faucets at the beginning of december

Foundations and waterlines are mandated to be below frost depth. In many places that is 42” below ground minimum. At that depth the earths heat keeps the ground from freezing.

it is supposed to get down to negative 18 tonight and only thing I’ve done is disconnect water hoses outside.

-30 here. Don’t need to run water or anything. Outside nozzles are taken care of.

Water lines come in through the basement

And?

Every house I've ever owned in South (Alabama,Georgia & Florida) All have lines running through the basement or crawl space..

I'm assuming homes all over the country
do the same.

Am I missing something?

Some people use heat cable on the pipes and gutters

No basement but we’ve never had an issue with our pipes and have not once in 7 years lost power.
