How are district attorneys allowed to have a private practice?

How is this legal?
This SEC court case today is being litigated by two Louisiana DAs both through their private practices.

They can only do civil cases and other non-criminal. They can’t do criminal defense. Lots of ADA’s are part time.

I think as long as they don't handle criminal cases, they can still maintain a private practice. Just avoid any conflict of interest, like any other profession

Small rural parishes don't have a lot attorneys living there so they allow it but limit it to an event.

In Louisiana, district attorneys are legally allowed to maintain a private practice if their position is structured as part-time and local district guidelines do not explicitly restrict them from doing so. Moonlighting is a common practice among prosecutors in the state.

It’s common in many states for smaller, rural counties. It’s absolutely ridiculous for Orleans Parish to have a part time DA.

The actual DA does very little work outside of perhaps the smallest parishes.

What I was coming to say.
The real issue is we have too many parishes and judicial districts. We need to consolidate rural ones into larger districts/parishes or have them join larger metros. This would solve a lot of problems outside of DA's having side jobs, too.
It will never happen b/c these are local job programs

You underestimate the number of crimes committed in any sizeable parish.

Because their elected positions are structured as part time. Low population equals low dockets. In rural, sparsely populated judicial districts across Louisiana, the volume of criminal cases is small. A full-time prosecutor position with a full-time state salary wouldn't realistically have 40 hours of criminal docket work to fill every week. I agree, consolidation should happen.

My experience is outside Louisiana, but is this really true? In a large metropolitan county the DA should absolutely be a very busy person with a large office to run. Hell, Williams continues to have cases dismissed because they aren’t being prosecuted on time.

Friend of a friend used to be Plaquemines DA. Sweet gig that merged well with his litigation practice.

Our DA covers 3 large rural parishes. He also has a private practice.

Idk about everywhere, but outside of guys like Hillar who occasionally handle high profile matters personally, the DA may not even have cases. They usually just manage the office, talk to the press, shake hands, and beg the legislature for more money.
