I haven’t been to Houston in years and I’m sure it’s changed like every other big city has over the past few years. What are some good hotels in safe areas within walking distance of the stadium where I won’t have to worry about being shot while walking?

Using Houston and Safe Area in the same post is a hangable offense.

Stadium is not in a good part of HOU. There are several common hotels - Staybridge, Residence Inn, Holiday Inn Express - within walking distance. I personally would not stay in that area. If you do, I would stay on South Main - I think it's the Staybridge.
Stay downtown and take the metro rail to game - getting home via rail can take some time.

Stayed at the Crowne Plazza down the street when LSU played Mahomes in the Texas Bowl.

Lobby/Bar was Decent. Rooms were shite.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn at the corner of Kirby and LaConcha for the Bills/Texans playoff game a few years ago. Easy walk to and from the stadium. Nothing fancy, but I never felt like I was in a bad area.

Definitely do this. There is nothing near the stadium that you'll want to be around. Downtown has bars and restaurants, and the ride on the metro is simple.

I stayed at the HI across from Reliant a few years ago. Nothing special but the location was great. Walked right out the door to the stadium to watch the Texans lose to the Patriots in the fourth qtr.
They let me leave my truck too even tho we’d checked out of the room.

But heed the warnings about the city. My coworkers there even warned me about how shitty it’s become. Yay democrat leaders.

You live in Baton Rouge and you’re worried about being shot in Houston? It’s not like you’re going to be walking the blade on Bissonnet St.

Staying downtown at Hilton or Embassy good options? Nice and safe to walk to restaurants nearby?

Hilton of the Americas is an easy walk to restaurants and bars (including on the east side of 59).

The area is safe as long as you don't drive a minute or two down OST. The area is just pretty boring. To the west of it is decent young yuppie neighborhood and to the east is the ghetto.
Anywhere you'll want to eat will be an uber or train away.

The med center expanions cant be finished soon enough. Riverside terrace and Almeda is prime for serious gentrification. The problem is that Sunny side will always be sunny side.

I booked a hotel near NRG stadium one time (for Supercross) and upon checking in I immediately informed the clerk behind the bulletproof glass that I wanted to cancel my reservation and then drove downtown and stayed at the Hilton.
