Poor girl. By all accounts she was a vivacious person who was valued by many. But they should not have had that window opened. The only Safari I've been on was in Arusha National Park in Tanzania, and I don't believe that there are any lions there. We were in open-air Landrovers. Did see a couple of leopards, though.

I'm friends with someone that was in the area when a woman was attacked and killed by a bear in the Fort McMurray area:

When I went to a wilderness park in South Africa (granted it was Elephant Park) to lions were lazy cats during the day time and I never saw any. If I had, and they had gotten anywhere close to the vehicle, that window would have been shut.

I saw that on the news but in the segment, they showed video of another near attach when an animal OPENING THE CAR DOOR! Can't remember if it was a lion or tiger or what not that it made any difference.
But to have your window down is stupid ... "here kitty kitty". Really???

MGM Grand has their lion enclosure. We walked through the tunnel under one of the females. Massive and the paws were ridiculous. Then the handlers threw out her toys. Watching that cat bat around a bowling ball like a ball of yarn was an "oh shite" moment.
I would do a safari. But not in a soccer mom SUV, and not with a window open.
Seeing the mgm lion and the video of the tiger jumping at that elevated safari vehicle was enough for me.
Also, those frickers know how to open doors.

if you watch this video it looks like the lion regularly chases small vehicles out of habit of dinner time.
