Probably shouldn’t post this in respect to those involved. But this is a terrifying stretch of interstate in the summer. This is sad and I feel for everyone impacted. But a wreck like this happens every so often on this stretch of interstate during the summer. I think it is a combination of overly aggressive driving headed south, tired/sunburned folks headed north, and big trucks. The worst wreck I have ever seen in person i came upon just south of Greenville in the Brewton/Repton area. A mini van headed north bound from the beach lost control, crossed the median, and struck an SUV headed southbound towards the beach. All 8 people in those vehicles died on impact. Vehicles in the north bound lane behind the wreck also got involved, and one f-250 ended up centering a pine tree in the woods hurting the passenger very badly. Other vehicles behind them hit the debris and were heavily damaged but there were no serious injuries. It looked as much like an airplane crash as a car wreck, and you could not tell what type of vehicle either of the two that collided head on were prior to the crash. I was headed south and got there just before troopers and fire/emt arrived. Pretty helpless feeling when there are two vehicles full on people destroyed, dead and on fire and nothing you can do. Before that, twenty eight years ago when I was a senior in highschool, I went to the saddest wake I have ever been to. A kid that went to another high school and was a year younger than me (but who was pretty good friends with a friend of mine) fell asleep while driving home from the beach and crashed. He walked away from the wreck with no physical injuries, but it killed his mother and both his sisters. He fell asleep driving home from the beach, and when he did everyone else was also asleep. His father had left their vacation a few days earlier because of work. He was 17 years old, was not drunk or under the influence, just worn out, and he killed his whole family. Seeing the two of them at that wake was about the saddest thing I have seen and can’t imagine the grief and regret.

Slow down, don’t be aggressive, and if you are tired pull over and take a nap or get a red bull.

Another random tip I share with anyone:

Whether you're on a 2 lane or 8 lane highway in a downpour. Always take the farthest left lane you can and hug the right side of that lane.

Left lanes have far less truck traffic and ruts.

And hugging the right side of any lane keeps you out of existing ruts, greatly reducing hydroplaning.

Yep, I wish Bama would hire 20 more state troopers that did nothing but patrol and give tickets on the stretch.

Who in the hell is gonna be looking at James Spann’s Facebook, Instagram, etc right after losing two grandkids and having other family members fighting for their lives? Gotta call BS on that one or the old lady has a serious social media problem.

She made the comment that she lived 4 hours away, so perhaps she commented it while they were trying to get to Montgomery or wherever they transported them? I’m not sure, she was just asking people to pray.

Yeah, that is bullshite. I know a couple people who have wrecked - one died from using cruise control on a wet road.

It happened to me in a four wheel drive vehicle with all the traction and stability controls. The road was dry until I went over a small hill where it had had a downpour. If I wasn't about to hit the brakes anyway to turn it would have been a very bad day for me and it still scared the crap out of me

I went to visit my parents down in Chilton county today. Normally I take 65 south, but for whatever reason today I decided to take the backroads down. There’s just something about heavy rain and heavy traffic that just unnerves me to no end. People simply can’t drive and use common sense unfortunately.

I avoid 65 like the plague on weekends during beach season. People drive like absolute assholes. Getting to/from their vacation is the only important thing in their minds. It’s awful.

And speeding. These taller and taller vehicles mask the sense of speed. I drive a car and at truck regularly and the sense of speed in my car is so much greater.

You see these folks breaking the speed limit by 15mph in a torrential downpour...and this is what happens.

I drive from Atlanta to places like Biloxi, Mandeville, or Metairie pretty frequently. Each time, I have to weigh the I-65 / I-85 option against the I-20 / I-59 option.

The I-20 / I-59 option is supposedly ~20 minutes slower. Is it safer?

On a beach weekend, I would say 20/59 is most definitely safer

I-65 between Birmingham and Montgomery backs up particularly bad on summer Saturday's, especially around Alabaster where it goes from 3 lanes to 2 lanes.

Yep, that was my jumping on point, but at the last moment decided to remain on 31

I'm sure there are some statistics to find to say for sure, but I20/59 has plenty of deadly wrecks, too. Not sure about # of lanes on I 65, but I 20/59 is six lanes now from I 459 to Tuscaloosa.

Yeah, I-20 versus anything isn't exactly a slam dunk.

Be safe, people. Don't take anything for granted. God is good, but those pictures are so bad.

Point of order: from 459 it's 4 lanes -- along with wide shoulders on either side -- that feed down to just two narrow lanes past Alabaster.

I tend to prefer I-20 on gut feel.

Yeah, you’re correct. Even worse.

I wish all of I-65 could be at least 3 lanes all the way through Alabama. Another problem spot is around the Cullman/Dodge City area north of Birmingham. There have been lots of fatal wrecks along that stretch. That’s another two lane area.
