The Emancipation Memorial statue that has stood in Park Square for more than 100 years shows Lincoln with one hand raised standing above a half-clothed freed slave with broken chains on his wrist who is kneeling at Lincoln's feet. The statue's pedestal reads "A race set free and the country at peace. Lincoln rests from his labors." The memorial represents Lincoln freeing African American slaves at the end of the Civil War.
quote:

"I've been watching this man on his knees since I was a kid. It's supposed to represent freedom, but instead represents us still beneath someone else," Bullock wrote in the online petition. "I would always ask myself, 'if he's free, why is he still on his knees?' No kid should have to ask themselves that question anymore."

Here's the kicker: the statue was funded by former slaves as a sign of thanks
quote:

The funding drive for the monument began, according to much-publicized newspaper accounts from the era, with $5 given by former slave Charlotte Scott of Virginia, then residing with the family of her former master in Marietta, Ohio, for the purpose of creating a memorial honoring Lincoln.[6][7] The Western Sanitary Commission, a St. Louis-based volunteer war-relief agency, joined the effort and raised some $20,000 before announcing a new $50,000 goal.[8]
According to the National Park Service, the monument was paid for solely by former slaves

This is the second thread here about a statue in Boston that I've never seen or heard of.

"I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."

This is what happens when you have zero understanding of history.

Those slaves would be embarrassed by how black people who are free and never had to go through what they went through are acting like today (I'm speaking of those who want this statue removed).

Just take down all statues already. If it's a statue, it's racist.

You see man, it’s a statue. They only move in great movies such as Night the Museum, Night at the Museum 2 and Night at the Museum 3. It’s not possible in real life for it to change after it’s been sculpted.
