Can someone TL;DR me on why they are protesting? Did they think when the city was transferred to China, China wouldn't do China things?

Hong Kong's capitalistic system is supposed to be safe from change for 50 years after the handover, which would be 2047. However, mainland China has gradually been eroding certain things in Hong Kong. The latest one was the proposed law that would allow extradition from Hong Kong to courts in mainland China. That was the spark that started this whole thing.
