Used to be a family tradition on July 4th. Have not done it in years. Damn you, Blue Bell homemade vanilla (minus listeria edition).

Does anyone still make home made ice cream?

We do. We bought one of those fancy Whynter machines. No more hand cranking. No more rock salt. No requirement to put a component in the freezer ahead of time.

Although I will say I miss the hand cranking. Us kids having to take turns on the back porch in the summer was a rite of passage.

This is what we have.

Pop rouge ice cream was a staple for us growing up. I remember my arm being worn TF out from cranking the machine waiting for it to freeze

Just bought an old style one off of amazon for like 40 bucks. It's got the churn and you need to add ice and salt to the outside. We made some fresh strawberry ice cream and it was freaking delicious. I plan on making it a stable come around football season as we usually have people over for cookouts during LSU and NFL games. Go ahead and pull the trigger. I think we are going to make some banana next and I saw a recipe for mint chocolate chip also.

Rock salt, the wooden churn, the loud motor, and a jar of maraschino cherries. 4th of July Maw Maw style.

I's pay $1,000 to have a bowl of that ice cream this 4th of July

Search the food board (extend the search period to a year) and look for the Ninja Creami thread.

I love it, because I can use all grass fed dairy, mix in protein powder, etc.

You beat me to it. Rite of passage!

No wonder our youth are softer than our ice cream. Kidding!

It may have been a rite of passage, but the blisters from compensating for lazy cranking cousins…ruined families. Joshing!

Yeah but my grandad was too cheap to buy that when he had a bunch of grandkids around.
