Lowe’s and Home Depot are ramping up surveillance in store parking lots in states including California, Texas and Connecticut AI-powered license plate readers to combat theft and keep customers safe — but privacy advocates warn the devices could track shoppers’ movements.

The systems can create searchable records showing where vehicles travel, when they arrive and how often they visit certain locations — prompting worries that the technology can amass data about consumer behavior that can be accessible to law enforcement, hackers, private investigators or even misused internally.

Home Depot was named in a class action lawsuit filed last week in California federal court alleging that the department chain was running a covert surveillance system using LPR technology and then feeding that information to a database accessed by law enforcement.

I present this evidence again to make one thing clear:

your life is not worse because of the top 1%

it is worse because of the bottom 1%

Also, can we watch the footage to see who is responsible for the surge in shoplifting?

Understanding this is easily the distinction between those on the right vs left.

frick those “advocates”.

Lowes & HD are private stores, their parking lots are owned by the stores.

The patrons have no expectation of privacy in their parking lots.

Hopefully the additional cameras will discourage criminal activity there.

I’m not ever there for nefarious purposes, take my visible information and create a log on my habits there.

Well if theyre caught shoplifting and the pursued for that crime and they happen to be illegal I suppose they'll get deported
given that's the current enforcement policy

but I don't see how the cameras can tell by just reading the license plates whether someone's legal or illegal, unless its a lowrider
and they're not gonna be able to get a warrant to chase down the drivers of the cars if they haven't committed a crime ,, because of the Constitution

but if there has been a crime and someone is reporting it to the police for investigation in this case, shoplifting,, i guess they just might catch a few

And if they commit an actual crime in front of cameras, the DA can subpoena those

Lowe’s and Home Depot are discount retailers. High sales volume and reduced overhead are parts of their business model.

Their property is private. They have all the rights.

Theft lowers profits and raises prices of their goods.

Lower theft. Lower prices. Higher sales volume.

I'm fine with that.

Sharing the info to outside parties is a trust issue. It hurts their brands.

If public (tax) money is paying for LPR information, it should be made freely available to the public through Freedom of Information.

If it's too sensitive or invasive to share, it's too invasive to collect for profit.

Well, a smart person would side with the Constitution, but you would have to understand it first

I wonder how many stolen cars will get returned by this use of plate reader? Why use your own car to steal a grand worth of tools.

The demand for systems like this is a symptom of a low trust society.

Every HD and Lowes I have been in already have cameras in their parking lots. Only difference will be the upgrade to ones with the readers.

What if the shoplifter just takes the license plate off the car before robbing the store?
Or
Better yet, the car has a paper plate on it? The number of crappy cars I see in baton rouge with paper plates is ridiculous. You know most of those have to be counterfeit

The problem at the bottom is more like 13%.
