There’s no reasonable expectation of privacy in public places.

Given all the problems that retailers are having, I suspect that some store chains will become members only.

Wife works in retail management. People shite and piss in the dressing rooms. People throw dirty diapers on displays, which means the items get "damaged" and not sold. They return stuff that has clearly been used. Nike items come in, they are gone within a day or two with only 1/2 or less being sold (as opposed to stolen).

But, no one seems to want to do anything about it. They are scared of being called racist, even though the shitty customers are not uniquely of one race.

Won’t matter. Pieces of shite just get better at being pieces of shite. If they tried to be good at anything honest they might actually be decent people but they’re not. They’re just pieces of shite.

The demand for systems like this is a symptom of a low trust society.

That same low trust society has no problem trusting the government and its agents with that info/data that is gathered.

I'd imagine there is a lot of downward pressure from government entities on these companies to willfully integrate this stuff into their private surveillance, knowing that the government will eventually have access to it all — if it doesn't already.

We continue to sacrifice every bit of our privacy for comfort and convenience.

ETA: And every step closer toward an endless and unavoidable surveillance police state is met with a shrug and the, "Well, they already do......" line. There isn't an ounce of fight left in anyone.

What if the shoplifter just takes the license plate off the car before robbing the store?
Or
Better yet, the car has a paper plate on it? The number of crappy cars I see in baton rouge with paper plates is ridiculous. You know most of those have to be counterfeit

Texas (one of the states this is happening in) has eliminated paper plates for this exact reason. Dealers either provide permanent temp plates that are registered or they transfer plates from previous vehicle if sold. I'm sure Louisiana will catch up in 20 years.

They need to install spikes that can activate at any time in the parking lot.

Dictatorship is a natural direction for low trust societies.

When people don't internally police themselves they demand that a strong external force do the policing.

High trust exists when people generally govern themselves with an internal moral code.

When theft, rape, and murder are rare, you don't need to spend a lot of tax money on police, courts, and jailers.

Plate readers in a store parking lot.
Who cares?
The minutue you leave the Home Depot parking lot you encounter the massive ALPR(automated license plate reader) system that tracks your vehicle just about everywhere it travels across the US and in real time sends info to local law enforcement about the vehicle and registered owner.

What should really piss you off is this...

Saw a guy walk out of lowe's with a basket full of chain saws several years ago. Another person in a brand new 4 door GMC was waiting. No license plate. Attendants hollered at him but couldn't stop him.

There are people here that see no problem with that at all. Sad where this nation is heading because of the naive “if you got nothing to hide” people. Little by little giving away our freedoms.

People justifying this data being freely available to government/LEO under the guise of “its a private business on private property who is collecting it” is baffling.

“Private businesses collecting that data, so they can do with it what they want, cause that America”. SMFH

The America being left for the future is a disappointment to our ancestors.

Service Merchandise had the right model.

Lots of display items in the front, you took a tag for what you wanted, you paid for it, then stock people in the back would bring it out for you.

We're willing to police ourselves and our communities. The problem is the legal system doesn't back good folks up anymore.

I know "FAFO" gets tossed around on the internet alot, but that's how it used to be out in the real world, and everyone understood that. Nowadays good people are hamstrung with one hand behind their back.

Thieves are going to ruin generous return policies for the rest of us if the big box stores don't curb the theft. It's not just petty thievery that's the problem, but return fraud that's hitting Home Depot and Lowe's.

The U.S. Post Office has them in employee parking lots to combat..... employee theft.
