For most that do those things? Yes. They work their entire lives, or until their body breaks down, and never make enough to really save. Then they’re forced to “retire” due to their health and have no money and a shitty end of life

They still do… but LSU has so many extra fees, it doesnt fully cover everything. I have a senior and junior- one made 36 and other 34 on ACT. LSU “scholarship” plus TOPs would barely cover their tuition and fees. Would still be OOP 12k+ annually for room and board. We live close enough for them to commute but neither will be attending LSU even though husband and I both have undergrad and masters from LSU. It just isnt what it used to be or worth it to pay for imo. My kids will likely go out of state or LA Tech and have all tuition, fees and room and board covered.

Young men, especially, have decided that the juice isn’t worth the squeeze when it comes to college. At these prices, i think they may be right.

Our only stipulation to our kids is "don't make our grandkids have to pay for their college. You be responsible to make sure they graduate without student loans hanging over their heads, the same as we're doing for you." We made them promise and our kids are honorable, so what we did was hopefully create the legacy expectations for future generations of our family tree.

Damn I just had one of those nostalgic 90s themed TikTok’s come across my feed while doomscrolling at lunch and Harvard tuition in 1997 was that much. One generation later and it costs as much for your kids to go to LSU as it did for you to go to Harvard.

My kid's mom is encouraging her to go out of the state. The problem is that me and her mom don't make enough money to even put a dent in the debt she's going to have to put herself into in order to do that. It's idiotic. I keep telling her to stay in LA for undergrad because that debt is going to keep her up at night and we can't afford to cover it.
This world has gotten out of control, this is a pretty clear can’t afford it situation that doesn’t require further consideration.

She paying for it or you are? If I was paying shouldn’t have much of a say in the matter
She is paying the difference between Loyola and LSU, bc I’m not.

My kids don’t qualify for any needs based aid. Their scholarships are all academic. I really don’t think it’s that bad. They work a bit, I kick in about 1k for each of them a month. They keep their grades up and tuition is covered by scholarships. Many people pay more for daycare or HS than I do my kids college.

I am budgeting at least $100k/year for the kids. Oldest just turned 10

How many kids do you have? Are you seriously budgeting $800k+ for your kids education????

My tuition was about $600/semester when I graduated LSU. College is the biggest rip off in the free market place. All these people in the college admin, profs, etc. that work there are not only ripping off the people they "teach", they are getting rich off the ridiculous prices they charge, you really aren't gaining that much unless you're 17-18 and know exactly what you want career wise(which most don't). If you aren't studying medicine, law, accounting and those types of professions, you are probably wasting money. Looking back on what I know now, if I had a kid that was approaching college and didn't know what he wanted to do, I'd advise to just go work in some field you think you might like. And lastly, if a student defaults on a college loan because he can't make the salary they bs'ed you into thinking you could earn, they should force the college they attended to pay it back. I'd bet a fast tuition drop would happen.

You mean that having the government offering high schoolers loans they cannot discharge has massively, massively increased the cost of going to college? I am shocked.

Can you give a breakdown? What is the actual tuition cost and dorm costs these days?
Will he still owe after grants/scholarships?

$105 or $150 a semester at Nicholls State was my tuition coast as a freshman. It was somewhere in that range.
