The crowd of onlookers intervened after Jackson began beating the man and subdued him for authorities. Among those who did so included Davy Crockett (who would die in a little over a year at a place called "The Alamo").
ETA: The would-be assassin was prosecuted by Francis Scott Key - he was found not guilty by reason of insanity and spent the rest of his life in a 19th Century insane asylum.

General Nathaniel Lyons at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, August 10, 1861.
Lyons was surrounded by Confederates and out of ammunition so he started throwing rocks. He lost.

He was in poor health and died of a heart attack a mere month later.
Captain Ronald Spiers of Eady company running through the occupied town of Foy Belgium to hook up with other units to trap the Germans and then running back to his men without being shot.
Band Of Brothers depicts this scene.
Just massive balls of steel.

Even the CNN analysts had to acknowledge how bad arse that response was even if they were in some cases obviously disappointed the shooter hadn’t finished the job in part because it was pretty obvious the election had just swung massively back in his favor.
