My son is graduating high school in May. Honors student with an “A” average. LSU is paid for, so if he doesn’t screw around, he graduate debt free. (As a side note, his tuition is covered by veteran’s dependent program, and everything else is covered with scholarships.) Two things I’ve thought about getting him are a new car (drives an ‘05 Suburban with 250k miles) or cash. But I have reservations about both. When I cashed my student loans every semester, I blew it on shite like drugs, alcohol and stereo equipment. I’m still paying for all that crap to this day. This e are the most expensive drugs you can buy, with interest. Second, the car, as much as Id love to, Id have to take out a loan to do so, and I think I want to be done going into more debt for my kids.

What say you? What were some cool gifts that you got for graduation or heard about?

Solid brag on kid thread

New car is bad idea. It will get beat up in no time.

A powerful computer wouldn't be a bad idea

Offering to cover books for first year would be another idea

Covering kid's car insurance is a third idea

What hobbies does he have?

Help him with these and he'll better be able to budget wisely for things like books and tutoring.

Actually, a newer car might not be a bad idea. Doesn't have to be brand new and expensive.

A new car is a terrible idea if he is going to be parking full time on campus

Graduating high school shouldn't be a big deal. I'd get him something small, a couple hundred bucks spent at most, and get the expensive gift for graduating college, which is much more of an accomplishment.

Bike sounds good. Unless the kid ain’t into a bike.

Why don’t you just ask the boy what he’d like?

This my thinking. Get Him something nice, ie. $1000 budget.

Buying someone a new car for graduating high school, something they should be doing anyway, is over kill

Take him on a weekend trip with you to somewhere both of y’all want to go. Make it memorable and you’ll both have that for the rest of your lives.
