My dad was a coach who taught Drivers Ed in BR back in the day.

I teach it everyday in my high school in Alabama. I’m 3rd party certified and give them their driving test at the end of the course and if they pass I print off their drivers license and they carry it to the DMV where they pay a $15-$20 fee and get their license. I also teach and test them for their boating license, which I can issue as well all for $0.

In BR currently, I don't know of any school taught drivers ed. The going price for teen courses is 600 minimum as far as I can tell

My dad taught me driving basics in the big parking lot of a Schwegmann grocery store back in the day when all stores were closed on Sundays. We had that big parking lot to ourselves.

I had to pay $450 for my son‘s drivers Ed. I remember at high school it was free for us

I don’t know how much my mom paid for it. I did it as some driving school in BR in the mid 90s

My son’s was $550 with a state licensed ‘Driving School’. Mandatory to get your permit/license before age 17. Plus 3 trips to the DMV for TIP, permit and license.
However I will say that with the appointment system at the DMV, they were some of the most pleasant appointments I’ve ever been to.

This can't be stated enough; schedule an early morning appointment and have zero wait!

I am so glad you are teaching her to drive and not attempting to teach her English.

How much have you paid for his drivers ED service which is just a coach thats pissed off about having to do it?
Took driver's ed in 1979/1980 school year at East Jefferson (EJ) HS in Metairie. It was free, part of school and offered to sophomores when you would normally have PE. So we paid NOTHING.
As other posters noted, first you had a few weeks of classroom instruction, then took a written test. Those who scored highest on the test got to do the driving portion first. I scored 4th highest, so I was in the 2nd group. You were graded on how you did on (1) the test, and then (2) the driving portion. Out of the 1st group of three, one guy got an "A" and the other two got "B"s for the final grade. In my group of three, we all got "A" grades because we were better drivers.
And it was coaches that taught driver's ed. My teacher was former longtime Tulane baseball coach Joe Brockhoff. He actually taught driver's ed while being the full time baseball coach at a university. And Grace King's 1st football coach had been the driver's ed teacher at that school before it became co-ed.
Times were different then. Back then, lots of NFL players had jobs in the off-season; Archie Manning sold cars at Royal Olds. Others worked construction or sold real estate.

Driver Ed didn't have an extra cost associated with it when I was in high school in the early-mid 80s.
Same. It was an elective and did not cost a dime

Had it as a sophomore in 1996-97. Taught by the golf coach. He did a good job. Actually took us out into the bus yard with the teaching car(had pedals on his side) and taught us. We also watched the occasional VHS 's of bad wrecks and drunk drivers.
It needs to be a required course in high school. Sadly those days are gone.

In 1986 it was our track coach who taught us.

that aint the case no more
Somebody had to have had a buddy in the legislature and got something passed. Tell the general public it’s for “safety” when it’s a kickback scheme for them to make $$.

My daughter’s first driving day she went on I-12. Before then she had never even hit 50 and one day she drove from Lacombe to 1077.
Roughly $450 if I remember correctly
