That being said, I feel like all 4 year degrees should be similar to Nursing...2 years learning fundementals in a classroom then 2 years on the job training. I learned more in my first 6 months on the job out of school than I did all 4 years combined.

I can't stress this enough. There is no way I'd send a kid to business school and not have them in an internship or co-op program. My nephew just graduated with a finance degree. He interned with a Fortune 500 company for three years. At graduation, he rolls into a management program that pays $60K/yr and has a company vehicle.

A friend of mine works for Goldman Sachs. He said that 90% of their new hires are co-ops or interns.

I sure as hell didn't know what I wanted to do at 18.

Hell, I just turned 31, have a bachelor's and a master's degree hanging on my office wall where I have worked since the day I graduated, and I still don't know what I want to do.

How many people do you know at 18 who are saving for retirement. They didn’t go to college for a reason.

Again, if the jobs were paying high enough, they would be filled.

Its not the money. Its the work, and also the fact that a hell of a lot of people cant pass a drug test.

Internships are huge in business. I hate to think where I'd be without mine.

It's the money and the work. Employee trades work for money, employer trades money for work. This is the basic transaction we are discussing. If the work has qualities such that not many people actually want to do it or not many are capable, yet it still needs to be done, an employer must raise wages if he hopes to fill the positions.

Why are so many people trying to argue against this fact?

That depends on the trade. We do inside plant work so it's a rare day that we have to step outside to do work. We do work in unconditioned spaces from time to time during the construction process.

My daughter's ex-BF was a perfect example of this. Dumbass was making job choices off of the company's drug testing policy. You truly can doom yourself over something that stupid.

I had a college job digging ditches. My brother and I got to go work on Alabama Power property because we were the only ones who could pass the drug test. We got paid 3x what everyone else got paid just because of that.

Because they're dumb. It's really shocking how they can't comprehend. It's not that hard. Working in an attic in La's summer heat would suck arse, but I'd do it for 250k.

Most in this thread seem to be falling into the same trap that OP's article is about. As a society we have assigned more value to a college degree than the market says they're worth. And we have undervalued the trades. Problem is, our estimations do not align with actual market conditions.

That (and military service) and you are pretty well set. I think the kids graduating school and enlisting prior to hitting the job market are miles ahead of the kids that have no clue what they want to do and wander aimlessly through college for years.

I work in O&G and if you have gone out and busted your arse on a pipeline or in a facility while you were in school, I will put that name at the top of the list with extra points for serving prior to college and maybe an instant offer for a prior service Marine. The kids that just show up with a degree with no real experience get a hard pass.

And that is why trades have to pay higher wages. Normal people with options don't want to turn wrenches in the heat for 40 years.

In my limited experience, I've noticed former military tend to get into management before those who didn't serve.

Do you own your own company? If so, you're an entrepreneur, not a tradesman. And if you don't, you're probably full of shite
