My mention of Black Mountain was because reference had been made to the first book in the One Second After series by Forschner , Have you ever heard of those books? The author lives in Black Mountain and sited the whole series of books there. If you've read the books you will have a better feeling for the topography there and how this storm could be such a disaster.
There the drainage is east.
So much of the drainage south of there flows to the northwest to Tennessee.

Yes I got the Nolichucky and French Broad confused. I'll blame it on sleeping bad and our lack of power. We looked at both areas in detail when we decided to move back up here.

If you've spent any time in the mountains, you've seen the beauty of small streams cascading down hill and mountain sides around somewhat rounded boulders. This storm shows that those boulders were moved by gravity with a shove from water.

Where is all the water going to go? Where is it going to slough to?

Coverage of Helene is pretty high up on cnn.com and msnbc.com

Fox News and Newsmax seem to be ignoring it.

Was finally able to find Canton Mayor @ZebSmathers just now, and he has some choice words for cell phone service providers — the lack of cell service during #helene and even as we speak has been appalling. Smathers told me: "The number one issue that I'm dealing with is the lack of cellular service. It started with Verizon. It seems to go to many [providers]. I have not been able to communicate with our emergency services directly from my cell phone since approximately 9 a.m. yesterday morning until today. The idea that not just us here in Canton — Haywood County and across Western North Carolina — we cannot communicate to our citizens and our emergency management is absolutely disgraceful. I have yet to hear any good reason. I understand that there have been several issues — power, water. We understand those issues, but the idea that our cellular network and the people that run those networks did not prepare for this storm or do what is necessary or have resources on the ground for us to be able to communicate with emergency management, the idea that anybody out there — though I hope it’s not true — had the ability to rescue someone and tell their loved ones to get out, and they couldn't because their cell phone signal when we needed our communication network the most has at best let us down and at worst put people's lives at risk. I want answers and I will not rest. I will be talking with Congressman [Chuck] Edwards. This is above my pay grade as a mayor, but the people of Western North Carolina need to know why this happened. We know there's going to be other issues and storms and natural disasters. I mean, we’re facing a storm, the worst we've ever had, and we we’re facing it with technology from the 1990s. I was able to speak with Governor Cooper and Attorney General Stein about this issue, and brought it to their attention very early yesterday with one of the few phone calls I was able to get out. If you cannot communicate, it affects your ability to respond to every single issue. And it's absolutely disgraceful."

I disdain the cell phone companies as much as anyone but I really don't know how they are supposed to be prepared to handle something like this

Idk how they can magically provide towers given flooding/mudslides/power issues/road access being cut off in so many places

But maybe I'm just ignorant

From TN(Greeneville) side of the mountains spent most of my life on the NC(Asheville) side. Any stream that has trout in it I have probably cast a line in it.

Not familiar with the books but sound very interesting. Thanks for the recommendation.

Sounds like the Mayor was unprepared.

How anyone in Florida, have a boat and not have a plan to secure it when a storm is coming is beyond me. Especially since all of those were easily trailerable.

I mean when you are dealing with that level of surge where are they supposed to take the trailered boat? There isn't exactly much high ground in these areas

IIRC it gets the Pigeon & Nolichucky dumped into in the Smokies near Newport, hence why they had to evacuate. Next it picks up the Little Pigeon before joining up with the Holsten. From there it basically forms the Tennessee I believe. Not to sure that far west.

Also the Swannanoa in Asheville dumps into the French Broad which is what is flooding everything on the east side of Asheville including Swannanoa and Black Mountain area.

Every one of those rivers is flooding areas before they join with the French Broad.

All the major cell service providers have mobile cell towers that they bring in after events like this to restore service until the towers are fixed

How can they do that without power? Even if they include a generator how do they do that when the roads are washed out between where they are and where the tower needs to be?

It's just pulled by a truck with a generator. Just like those portable lights that can be set up. Obviously there has to be roads.

Has anyone found out a total number of deaths yet? Hurricane Michael had only 74 at a Category 5 and I’m afraid to say this but I think Helene is going to surpass that number. So sad. Harvey had 107.

They’re called “COWS” (Cell On Wheels)-
Portable self contained cell towers which can be stood up quickly after an emergency.

Seems like there’s never enough of them. With today’s dependence on cell, you’d think FEMA/ the $1T infrastructure bill would increase funding for that or other emergency technology as a priority.

Nashville news is reporting more than 30 missing in Unicoi County. How is the national guard found to help all of these people? I’m not a fan of gov, but GD, they sure are making sure to bring in and help foreigners. Where is their help and aid for these folks? What are they doing? All I saw was Karmella saying on c-span aid should be given by race/poor. This is a1/3 of our country affected.

Not a chance. There's no ratings (so they think) watching whitey digging out. Look at Hurricane Michael, it got very little play since it was a very red area. That hurricane was devastating, but you would never know it based on the coverage. In order to get coverage, it has to effect a certain segment of the population.

First, your bullshite politics have no place in this thread, this is coming from someone who has spent the day trying to find out if friends and family are safe or even alive. To make matters worse you are outright lying about the coverage. CNN and MSNBC have had a slide show with multiple links running at the top of their landing page all day, conversely, there has been nothing on the Fox landing page all day.

Here are the current landing pages:
