Here to serve got to Jasper late this afternoon. Served 450. Not bad for first day. We usually do 600, but once word gets out those numbers will go up.

If anyone knows anyone who lives in this area please let them know we are at Harvest Fellowship Church.

Our power and communications infrastructure is incredibly weak

Of course it is, never denied such things

That still doesn't explain how cell companies are supposed to overcome these obstacles as quickly as this mayor seems to have expected

Here is an interesting watershed type site. You can put in a particular town, or just click the map and it will show you how and where water runs off, taking you through every stream and river.

First, your bullshite politics have no place in this thread, this is coming from someone who has spent the day trying to find out if friends and family are safe or even alive. To make matters worse you are outright lying about the coverage. CNN and MSNBC have had a slide show with multiple links running at the top of their landing page all day, conversely, there has been nothing on the Fox landing page all day.

Here are the current landing pages:

Landing pages are not live TV coverage

If this were taking place in another demographic there would be non-stop 24/7 TV coverage so stop with your bs

meanwhile...

All the major cell service providers have mobile cell towers that they bring in after events like this to restore service until the towers are fixed.

That is all well and good, but when literally every major road into an area is impassable a cell tower being towed behind a truck is useless.
The only way into a lot of populated areas right now is by air.

The national guard has helicopters. They also have fancy radios so they could station guys with radios with first responders and at places like hospitals to ensure steady communication. Not having cell phone service isn't the end of the world.

Agreed there are other methods which brings us back to why this mayor didn't have contingencies in place to use those methods instead of blasting cell providers for something they could do little about?

I doubt states like Tennessee and Kentucky are as prepared as gulf coast states for major catastrophes. They're not used to widespread shite like this. They get a tornado or something every now and then.

At least the rain we are getting today and tomorrow is light and misty.

I mean when you are dealing with that level of surge where are they supposed to take the trailered boat? There isn't exactly much high ground in these areas

Not a single one of those boats have a trailer attached, trailered boat are strapped in...

Not trying to be a dick here, but as former long term boat owner, just no circumstances where my boat floats around randomly in an area with known hurricane and surge activity.

Here's a visual that shows the lake level at Douglas (that's getting the runoff from western NC). the summer pool elevation is for recreation, then they draw the upper lakes down for winter storms. Look to the right, that's how fast it filled after Helene, and how much they plan to drop it before what ever comes next. LINK

We're getting our first look at the devastation in Western NC, what officials are now calling "Buncombe County's own Hurricane Katrina."
County Emergency Management held a press conference this afternoon, calling the damage "biblical." Here's what we learned:
quote:

- No official death toll yet, and no names are being released. Recovery of bodies is still ongoing. Asheville PD is going door to door in some areas, doing welfare checks
- Cell providers say it will be "several days" before service is restored, no solid timeline yet
quote:

- Looting is now an ongoing issue. Some arrests have been made. A curfew goes into effect at 7:30pm
- Landslides and water rescues are still happening today. There have been 150 rescues and counting in Buncombe alone
quote:

- There's currently only one major way in and out of Asheville. That's via I-26 to the South
- Water infrastructure has been severely damaged. Crews are now trying to reconstruct portions of the system. Those that do have water are under a boil water advisory
quote:

- Emergency food and water supplies haven't arrived yet. Once they do, the county will establish distribution locations
- Shelters: WNC Ag center is at capacity (400 individuals). Asheville Tech just opened as a shelter and is taking people now
quote:

Shelters (cont'd): If you have pets you want sheltered with you you can still go to the WNC Ag center and they will make arrangements for you
quote:

- Another presser will be held 10am tomorrow (Sunday) via FB Live

UPDATE - The Water intake plant that supplies water to Greene County and some areas of surrounding counties is completely unsalvageable. The GWC turned off the pumps at 2 PM today and the county will run out of water by tomorrow morning and be out for atleast a week. Emergency pumps are being brought in, but due to complications at a downstream system, it could take days for them to get started. Meaning the county will be without water for days/weeks.

Here is the full statement from the Water Department:

This has been a historical, unprecedented event. Last night, our intake structure was enveloped by the Nolichuckey River. As most know, the Greeneville Water Commission supplies water to Greeneville and the majority of Greene County through five utility districts. Our intake structure is how we pump water from the river to the treatment plant. It was totally submerged.

After the water receded today. We discovered that there is not much, if anything salvageable at our pumping station. We have a supply at our plant but it was quickly being used due to circumstances out of our control. We have storage tanks in our system as do the utility districts. At 2 pm today we turned the pumps off at our treatment plant that feeds the distribution system.

The water in the storage tanks is what is left. This should be a 24 hour supply under normal conditions.

We are having emergency pumps delivered tomorrow but these things take time. We have to configure piping to our existing infrastructure to get it to our plant which is a few miles away.

We are working incessantly, around the click, to do all we can do as is all of our utilities and first responders.

Please be kind and patient. We have families that we are not able to go home to right now either.
With all of the misinformation, I wanted you to hear it from the horse's mouth ( or as some might say another part of horse anatomy). We do not know how long we will be without water. It is not an if but a when. We are hoping for a week to when we can start pumping. Please give us time and please pray for our community and come together instead of criticizing.
