Between retirement and taxes, 40% of my paycheck is gone before I see it. And I'll only ever see the money back from the 401k/457b. Assuming the house of cards known as the economy doesn't collapse before I reach eligibility. It's a total fricking sham.

Its higher in that there are few, if any, sources of non-taxable income. Retirement benefits, for the most part, are not exempt. But, overall, its much cheaper to live here than in most of the US. Two people can live a great lifestyle for under 50k combined.

Actually had to sign a document 2 weeks ago, that if we paid 250 direct to clinic, we were prohibited from filing the bill with our insurance co.

Everyone I know with a second passport only goes to a country with socialized medicine when they need healthcare.

I’m of the opinion you shouldn’t be allowed to voluntarily admit yourself to the hospital if you can’t pay a certain amount up front. You only get admitted regardless of pay ability through either a doctor referral or paramedic due to a 9-11 call (accident or health emergency). This ensures it’s actually necessary and the deadbeats aren’t gaming the system to get free care for their kids when they have the sniffles. If you want to use ER for non emergencies you must pay day 3-400 dollars up front

My daughter got RSV at a few weeks old and had to bring her to the ER. She got admitted on a Friday — main staff gone so nobody was able to discuss financials with me or my insurance coverage. The only treatment she received was .25L of O2/hr. Not one doctor came in to see her, just nurses and assistants every 8 hours. Discharged on Sunday morning.

Did you take her straight to ER or was she referred to ER by a pediatrician? Insurance will cover that if you have it but you need the doctor to send her to hospital and document it properly. Otherwise insurance will claim it was a voluntary admittance and she didn’t meet criteria for coverage

Ding ding ding ding ding.

I keep saying the favor the poor and rich in this country for years and years. They want to eliminate the middle class and the health care system in this country is further proof. Like OP said they're okay with taking care of the poor/homeless all day every day without getting a penny from them and incur a lot of debt, but the normal working class has to pay no matter what. Complete bull shite.

In your mind, who would make up for the debt if you let those that could pay, settle for less than they owe?

You are right that payers get screwed. Welcome to socialism.

But, I get just as frustrated at those that have this idea that it's possible for EVERYONE to just settle these debts at discounts with no ramifications.

This doesn't seem to work very well for the Medicare system. In fact, it's the exact opposite of what you state.

Just don’t pay it

I stopped paying all the bullshite bills 4 years ago....used to constantly get "collector notices"...eventually they would just go away. If they called I would tell them to call the insurance company that I send thousands of dollars a year to.

4 years later...I have yet to pay a medical bill...my credit is still 750+
I'll never pay another medical bill

I pay less than .8 on the dollar. F’em. I’ve paid what I thought was reasonable and moved on for years. I get letters I throw away all the time. Use the money to invest or pay off your house. The system is corrupt and criminal.

Next time, say No hablo espanol. A co-worker of mine flat out told an ER they weren’t getting a dime from him when asking for his copay (he’d already met his deductible, too) as he sat and watched all the usual deadbeats go before him and weren’t asked for a penny. We have to learn to play the system like them.

Too poor to be rich, too rich to be poor. Worst of both worlds.
