I’m a doctor and don’t have health insurance b/c obama made it unaffordable. Took my son for an X-ray that I wrote the order for at a local hospital. The bill was $508 dollars. No doctor visit, nothing else. Just an X-ray

Can you explain how this happened? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I am generally curious to hear a Dr perspective on it.

I was hiking in the woods one time with my ex gf, and we are on a slope, and I grabbed a tree to brace myself for a second. That lodged a very large branch from the top of the tree, and it fell right on top of my ex's head. It didn't knock her out, but left a grapefruit sized welt on her noggin. She was in a daze. We made it back to the car, and went to the hospital. I definitely got plenty of suspicious looks, and was a little insecure when explaining what happened to her parents. She ended up being fine, probably a mild concussion.

Holy moly, that's pretty wild. Glad she's ok.

Too much to ask for you to post the neighbor's Ring doorbell camera footage?

That's pretty scary though.

my wife, no pics, spent a few years working in the medial profession, and a few of those dealing with the insurance side, so she speaks the language, years ago her mother spent almost two months in the ICU with no ability to pay out of pocket costs before she eventually died, negotiated away, a few years later her brother was terribly injured in a motorcycle wreck a few states away with no one to take care of him while he was rehabbing, she was able to get him a medi-flight on a corporate jet to where we live for zero out of pocket, every time we get a medical bill she'll look at it and if it doesn't look right to her she'll call the office and ask them to change to code and refile, there are ways around it

is it really this easy? Do you have to "speak the language?"

Sure. I am a private practice PCP. The system as a whole is screwed. In 2009 when Nancy Pelosi and the other assholes shoved Obamacare down your throat, they went on a nationwide tour to sell this crap. I remember her looking at the audience saying “your health care cost will not increase one cent”. Well, when you pump in 50 million non-cart pushers into the insurance market, it fricked anyone who works for a living. I paid $45 a month for health insurance in 2002. I don’t qualify for the market having a small business

I want is people like AOC pelosi and McConnell in charge of my health
they wouldn’t be. That is just political bs.

I am not necessarily in favor, in fact I am not in favor of socialism in any fashion. But our current system isn’t as stellar as we try to pretend.

but the hospital will use a 3rd party contract anesthesiologist and MRI technician, neither of which are covered by your insurance, so you take the hit.

The hospital doesn't do the physician's billing. They have no clue what ins they are contracted with.

Eh, VA took care of my issue faster than my private did. We are getting bamboozled and are told to love it.

Pre-Obamacare our individual family plan from BC/BS was $400/month with a reasonable deductible.
Post-Obamacare, the exact same plan was $2000/month with increased deductible and less coverage.

Don't you know the gov't said that old plan was substandard? It didn't cover all kinds of things that you didn't want it to, but Big Brother says you need.

I worked in Access and/or accounting for 2 large hospitals for 17 years.

Payment plans are certainly always an option, but not at a discount. You're offered a discount if you can pay in full either day of or within X amount of days after your visit.

But I've never heard of payment plans and a discount

Sort of true. Correct that payment plans and discounts aren't offered jointly. But if you say you can only pay $10 per month and pay that to them, eventually they will likely write off the account because it's not work the work and cost of sending out the bill each month. I see that happen with our CBO quite often.

in the medical field this seems to be the case

It only seems to be the case because you ignore the costs being passed on to the payers.

100% it was more like...
- Fine. Get out of the way and I'll do it myself.
- Whether she heard you or not...she was determined that she'd try to prove you wrong and do it anyway.
- You're pissed that she's not strong enough and start throwing that branch around...

At least that's more like how things always went at my house!

They’re all trash. My wife and I had a baby this year and the amount of piecemeal bills they send is unbelievable. There’s absolutely no way to figure out what’s what and if the amount they’re asking you to pay is correct. Why are doctor visits/surgeries/procedures the only thing we “purchase” without knowing the price first?

On our second I didn’t have to pay anything up front. The hospital, which my MiL works at and knows a bunch of people in billing, actually told us not to pay anything when the bills start coming in. I got bills for three months, for the same stuff, all were different amounts. My insurance rejected my son’s hearing test because we share the same first name and the hospital filed it under the wrong person. (Why would a 37 year old need an infant hearing test?)

Hospitals are notorious for making bills available without any adjustment from insurance.

Dealing with this now
Told me before surgery it would be 2500.00 after insurance
Made me pay 1600.00 before surgery
Got my EOB in, my portion was 600.00

Now I’m trying to get my 1k back & it has to move through their accounting dept for approval, could take up to a month before I get my money

Illegal to ask for ID
Please cite the statute that says it is illegal for a hospital to ask for an ID.

I'll wait.

Yea, not illegal. I'm assuming he just meant not required to be seen in an ED.

His other point was pretty spot on. Every ED I've been a part of, you know darn well if someone is faking a name to get out of a bill, but there was never anything that could be done about it. You still had to see them.
