Hawaii swimmers stealing dead whale's teeth, hungry sharks swarm

oh frick no...that's more dumb than the chic swimming with the great white. But if it is already dead and you didn't kill it, why is it illegal to get the teeth?
In my opinion, if you didn't kill it, or contribute to it's death, that is a stupid reason to go to jail.

Hawaii officials were horrified to receive reports that swimmers were seen allegedly harvesting a dead whale's teeth and approaching its body — at least one man reportedly standing on top of it — while dozens of hungry sharks surrounded it.
quote:
Both state and federal officials with the Hawaii Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, respectively, have been called to investigate after obtaining copies of a video that shows a man, who is currently unidentified, standing on the animal's carcass.

“If this incident or any others happened within state waters, state laws come into play. Additionally, since sperm whales are protected by the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act, any violations could bring about federal charges as well…no matter whether they happen within state jurisdiction or further out to sea in U.S. waters,” said Jason Redulla, the chief of the Hawaii Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement,

"The video of this man standing on top of the carcass is a clear violation of the law and it is also extremely culturally disrespectful,"

I hugged a manatee in Florida. Deal with it.

Worse thing for whales is fishing nets. The most torturous thing for whales is Navy sonar. It blows out their eardrums.

With protected species it doesn't even matter if the animal is dead. If you find a bald eagle feather and keep it you are breaking the law and could be fined up to $250k. You have to have special permission to possess anything like that, even if you find it in your backyard and the bird just dropped it as it was flying by.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but this kind of draconian law for sperm whales and bald eagles is retarded.

No it’s not draconian because people poach birds etc. everyday, it protects them. It’s easy to say oh it was dead I found it.
Look at what’s happened to elephants and rhinos being killed for parts.

quote:Exactly! I haven't ever run across a rhino or elephant, especially any of their feathers. All due to killing their parts.

Apparently it can be used for ivory.

I mean I get the protection of Rhinos and elephant but I think these animals are totally different. I would agree with you if bald eagles were endangered, since they would be relatively easy to kill and get away with. But it’s not even an endangered animal. And it’s not like people are out there with harpoons going after sperm whales to sell the teeth. It’s a fricking whale. A poacher would need bare minimum $50 Grand worth of boat and equipment just to find a sperm whale, and that’s presuming someone still has the know how to hunt them. If someone takes some teeth off a dead whale, who cares?
Rhinos and elephants live within walking distance of millions of dirt poor Africans who only need a rifle and a few bullets to take one down.
