Kobe is interesting to me because it might be the biggest case of revisionist history concerning a celeb. He wasn't wildly popular when he was playing. The Jordan fanboys weren't big on him because he was the heir apparent to MJ as the greatest player. His infidelity scandal didn't help his image at all. He came off as the villain in the Shaq/Kobe soap opera on the Lakers ("Kobe, tell me how's my arse taste?"). People accused him of throwing a tantrum in Game 7 against the Suns in 2006. His upbringing and demeanor didn't endear himself to the hip-hop crowd. Six months before he died if you'd have taken a poll of the most popular athletes or ex-athletes, I doubt he would have cracked the Top 20.
As soon as he died, people acted like Santa Claus had passed. Strange.

I didn't cry, but I had to get drunk after Eric Clapton killed SRV with that sketchy chopper pilot he sent to get him.
Still hate that fricker..

No. Felt genuine sadness when Reagan passed, but it was probably time for him to "slip the surly bonds of earth" given his diagnosis.

crying at the sheer news that a celebrity had died? No
at the tributes/eulogies/video packages? Yeah, I've gotten a little misty-eyed at those

Uh, Vin is still alive. He was even tweeting about the Dodgers ring ceremony yesterday.

Didn't cry but Kobe and Chester Bennington hit me hard.

Back then it was different. They did not have internet, etc like today. It was a huge deal to watch Elvis in concert, etc

As said above I've dropped tears(not full on crying) for cancer stories with kids. Just so heart breaking.

Not specifically when they died, but sometimes video memorials are so well done that it’s hard not to tear up, even when it’s not someone whose death itself impacted me.
But I would say these are the deaths that at least actually hit hard, often due to how shocking they were:
Robin Williams (someone who brought such joy for decades committing suicide was just a reminder that we don’t know what someone is going through).
Kobe (for obvious reasons)
Paul Walker (crash itself was so terrible)
Chadwick Bozeman (the fact that he was battling Colon Cancer for years while filming all of those films was incredible in and of itself).

I had a buddy that missed a week of school when Dale Earnhardt died

Levon Helm and John Prine both hit me hard. I didn’t sob but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t tear up a couple of times listening to their music
