Dead on the side of I-20 near the river.

Yes, years ago I saw one dead on the side of the road near Winnsboro, LA. The sun was just starting to rise that day and I wasn't sure what it was until I actually pulled over and stared at it for a few minutes. I'm still not sure what caused it to die, but there it was.

I've seen one before on my grandparents land in Pride. It wasn't very big, but still an interesting sight.

I saw one after crossing into Louisiana from Mississippi on Highway 65 headed south.
It was standing up next to a tree.

Decades ago they shipped in bears to rebuild the Louisiana population that had disappeared. Most all of the bears we see here are carpetbaggers.

Years ago when I spent a lot of time on Weeks Island, they were numerous and a nuisance.

Yes they are becoming quite prevalent in north Louisiana

I saw a sow and 2 cubs up in a pecan tree munching on green pecans in Bayou Cocodrie NWR near Ferriday a couple years ago. Heard the crunching, thought it was pigs that I could shoot. First ones in my 50+ years in Louisiana. I can’t believe there are enough to hunt, as much time as I’ve spent in the woods.
Saw a small black bear in Yosemite NP in 2017. Just saw a 300#er in Maine at Acadia NP, while driving.

Used to see one all the time when Catholic High had a live mascot.
Rest in Peace, Blackie.

In the mid 90s, a couple friends and I were brushing a duck blind in the marsh in St. Mary Parish. We noticed 2–3 dark colored animals in the distance, but could not identify what they were. We cranked up the airboat and went to investigate. When we got about 50 yards away, we saw that it was two cubs and a mama bear. She stood up to make herself tall and intimidate us. It worked, we turned around and got the hell out of there. It was a cool experience!

"A grizzly". Worked in Yellowstone National Park during my college days. Five of us crammed in a small Chevy, driving down the main 2 lane road in the Park, close to midnite. A huge grizzly passed us on the shoulder. We were going 35 MPH. The grizz loped past us, leaving us in the dust. Hard to even imagine an animal that big being so fast.

From Minnesota IRRC. There was still a remnant population in the Atchafalaya Swamp so most of the ones now probably have at least some native genes.

Yes, saw several near Lake Bruin in Tensas Parish.

Co worker actually told me a story yesterday that he ran up on two in St. Francisville one evening.
Not sure if it was a Black bear but one was in the trees in Baton Rouge/Broadmoor a little over a year ago. People at the Methodist Church were filming it and it obviously made the news.

Yes. They look like hogs in the summer down here, skin showing through their thin coat. Act like them too, will pat down a half acre of corn and just sit there and eat. Love to bite holes in poly pipe too

Black bears in Louisiana are pretty famous actually. President Theodore Roosevelt made two trips to hunt them. The first time, his aides couldnt scout one out for him, so at the end of the hunt they tied a bear to a tree and he refused to shoot it
This story led a shopkeeper in NYC to produce "Teddy" bears in honor of Roosevelts kind gesture

quote:
The name teddy bear comes from Theodore Roosevelt who was often referred to as "Teddy". The name originated from an incident on a bear-hunting trip. There were several other hunters competing and most of them had already killed an animal. Roosevelt's attendants clubbed and tied a black bear to a tree. They called Roosevelt to the site and suggested that he should shoot the bear. Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear.
quote:
Morris Michtom saw the Berryman drawing of Roosevelt and was inspired to create a small soft bear cub, and put it in his candy-shop window in New York City with a sign reading "Teddy's bear". The toys were an immediate success
