I think it's considered derogatory to call them oriental.

I have in the US a couple of times. It's pretty unusual.

But I imagine in Asia it happens all the time. Literally a billion people essentially live in shantytowns, existing on rice and beans with zero benefits, which is arguably worse off than being homeless in the US.

I remember a speaker coming to my school in like 1994 mentioning oriental is for objects, and Asian is for people. I wasn't in an overly progressive area, so sometime before that, I imagine.
