So was mine. She was only there to coach cheerleading. She got tired of me constantly correcting her on shite and one day decided to dig her heals in by insisting Sao Tome and Principe were two different countries. Bad move on her part.

I bet her mind was blown when she learned about Trinidad and Tobago

20 years ago when I was in college - I had a professor from Europe for one of my history classes - to be a dick he gave us a geography quiz - I got them all right (my dad was a civics/history/geography teacher and my mom’s minor was geography)

He was convinced I had attended school in Europe. it was a small class (12 students) and the other students were pissed bc I messed up the curve.

My 9 year old is obsessed with maps. He finishes his work for the day and goes back and forth from the map to the globe.

I don't remember what grade I took it in but it stuck, I can still point out most countries much less the states.

Way to accept zero accountability for your son being oblivious to basic.l information about your own state.

I mean you have maps at the click of a button. Imagine thinking this is great information to have in your head

So... What are they gonna do when all this tech comes crashing down and their phones don't link up to provide them with a gps route? People can't read road maps in an atlas anymore, much less figure out topos and read a compass. I'll wager that fewer than 30% of kids today can even point out Orion, the Big Dipper, or Polaris in the night sky.

We've allowed a world of internet dependent idiots to come nearly into adulthood.

Geog was dropped as a requirement decades ago. Some schools offer it as an elective, usually on an AP level. It’s sad.

Just asked my son who is almost 12 to tell me where the state capital of FL is? We live in Fl and i got crickets from him.

Tangent: Do all states use 7th Grade to teach state history, or is that a Texas obsession?

ETA: Happy San Jacinto Day.

I only teach my kid where the red states are at. No reason to acknowledge the fricked up blue state shitholes.

You can blame phones for that and being able to look up directions at the click of a button.

The days of using an Atlas or even printing directions is long gone.

I am grateful my grandfather taught me how to use an Atlas when I was young when we were travelling together.

I was driving up to Huntsville from New Orleans and stopped at this shite gas station on the way. The guy had all sorts of shite in there including maps. I bought a couple because you dont see them that often.

People in the US in general are ignorant about geography, both internationally and their own country/state. It’s pathetic.

Last night at the Pelicans game, between quarters they had a timed trivia competition between two patrons.

They asked one to name three US States that begin with the letter “A”.

She had 15 seconds to answer.

First answer out of her mouth was “Atlanta”.

She vapor-locked after that answer.

I was very entertained. Her vote counts just like mine.

I teach 7th grade science. Unit 7, which we test on tomorrow, is about why the Earth has seasons and the causes of them and other points. One question on my quiz last week involveda diagram of the Earth on its orbit at the four seasonal points and asked in which position is the US in now (Spring)? I was floored that it was the most missed question (almost 50%). When probing why kids missed it...many thought we were in the Southern Hemisphere because we "live in the South." This is something that I just assumed kids knew...but, yes, the geography skills are appalling. Of note, in our district, the "Gifted" kids have a specialized class where they take them OUT of Social Studies for Gifted. The ones who remain in Social Studies actually don't do shite in the class...it is remedial for Math and English since those are the "tested" subjects. Education now is completely a numbers game. Nothing else matters no matter what the district says.

If your sixth grader doesn't know what your state capital is, that's on you, not the school. That should come from basic parenting and citizenship, not public school geography class. Shitty parents raise shitty citizens.

Teachers blaming parents is typical. I don’t even know you, but will almost guarantee you are a teacher and love to complain about low pay, raising someone else’s child and how you really work more than 2000 hours a year.

Parents should play a major role, but of it’s to the point of teaching geography then when would it stop for you? Calculus? Trig? Should we just homeschool if it’s to that point and end the charade of public education?

Kids aren't educated anymore, they are taught useless bullshite.
Wasn't there a thread a while back questioning the usefulness of a globe? People need to understand that they (themselves) are not the center of the universe. Buy your kid an atlas.

Yes.

In ‘the best’ private schools you will be teaching your own child as well.
