All together? Kids these days have no clue where anything is? Do your kids know where most states are in the United States? Countries in the world? probably not. Just asked my son who is almost 12 to tell me where the state capital of FL is? We live in Fl and i got crickets from him. Kicker is he gets A's and B's in School. Is it just the schools here in Florida? or is it everywhere? A whole generation of kids growing up with no idea where anything is. What about where you live? your kids geography challenged?

You can blame phones for that and being able to look up directions at the click of a button.
The days of using an Atlas or even printing directions is long gone.
I am grateful my grandfather taught me how to use an Atlas when I was young when we were travelling together.

How are they going to find the correct riot without geography?

Don't recall my youngest taking a geography course specifically, but I do remember him doing the 50 states a while back.
That said, the kid is kind of strange but he's wicked smart. Just turned 14. He fairly routinely will be doing something like eating a piece of toast and then look at it, then me and say, "This looks like Spain, if you include Portugal."
I've gotten to the point where I just shake my head on move on...

I don’t think they learn geography outside of elementary school anymore

Also, any post-millenial middle schooler whose parents instilled in them even a modicum of interest in learning would have by now googled "what is the capital of my state" just out of curiosity.

It’s definitely not something that’s hammered home but it was like that when I was growing up too. Touched on here and there but not the focus of anything. I’m a geography nut and took it as an elective in college, it was crazy how many people didn’t know squat about the world.

To be honest my Geography teacher was basically retarded. World class idiot who reminds me of a nicer version of Ricky Bobby. I knew more about geography going into 9th grade than he did. I swear I’m not making this shite up:
Coach: “This unit we’re going to be studying the country of Africa.”
Me: “Coach, Africa is a continent.”
Coach: “Well you’re right in saying that, but like Australia, it’s also a country.”
He argued with us on why anyone would name a country South Africa and said it was similar to the Dakotas. He also was pretty insistent that the Capitol of New York was New York City.

My 16 yr. Old son that learns a lot through scientific and historical documentaries didn't realize that their is a Washington D.C and a state named Washington. He's always busting big facts on me because he's addicted to documentaries, I got to throw that in his face ,

We’ve got to get coaches out of social studies and civics.

Government indoctrination centers (public schools) aren't worried about teaching kids tangible things. Social justice, hate the USA, hate whitey, and "climate change" are the rage for the teachers' union.

And to the OP, get your kid some Carmen Sandiego games. They’re pretty good for teaching kids geography and some history. Fortunately I had a great history teacher throughout my school that followed us like Mr Garrison (not in a perverted way) up the grades to where he was a hell of a good teacher.

OP's kid isn't interested in some kind of bullshite RPG that tricks him into learning. He's busy with his private hitting coach.
You want your kid to learn civics? Send an email to your local representative in the state legislature. Ask if they can shadow them for a day. If you live in a big city, do it at the municipal level. Guarantee they will agree.
If you can't do that, don't rely on a junior varsity position coach to teach your kid basic knowledge to make them responsible citizens. Do it yourself.

They need to put vocabulary and spelling. My kids, nieces, and nephews can’t spell for shite.

Too bad if it's not being taught.
Knowing where places and things are does not answer why they are there.
