Maybe I’m sheltered, but I’ve been to stadiums and ball parks all across the country. Most are in vibrant areas with nightlife and safety a priority. Houston chooses to let theirs rot away with homelessness and the filth they bring. I wouldn’t be caught dead around Minute Maid, the Toyota Center, or Dynamo stadium at night. At least NRG is off the beaten path but there’s also zero around it to do.

I didn't think they were that bad when there are games/events happening, but there could very easily be issues if nothing is really going on. I actually thought the area around BVAA Compass/Shell/Dynamo was improving with new hotels and apartments. Hard to do much around the freeway though. Seems like every town has a homeless camp under elevated sections of highway.

Disclaimer - I also used to live in West Loop in Chicago and could walk to United Center in one direction and to the Chicago river in the other. I could go from really nice area full of yuppies to really sketchy in a matter of steps or just a couple of stops on the pink line. So my perspective is probably a little off. But to me a homeless person isn't really a bother unless there is a disproportionate number of them outside relative to everyone else.

Houston has a lot of ball parks and convention center space in one fairly small area that doesn't really have THAT much housing or any kind of alternative draw other than those events/games.

Wrigley field in Chicago by contrast is in a neighborhood that stays fairly busy and safe most of the time. Chicago seems to spread their homeless out, then winter tends to clear it up temporarily. Houston doesn't have that benefit.

If you think Houston is bad, and I am Downtown there a few times a month, you should head out west. Bum camps are the new normal. Society is producing dropouts en masse. I’m not sure is any realistic fix for this multifaceted problem. Open air bum camp drug scenes are the future.

Crazy concept, but maybe stop subsidizing the drop out behavior and drug use? Maybe stop voting for politicians who enable it? Maybe shut down the fricking border to illegal activity where most of the drugs come through? Maybe enforce the laws that are already on the books around drug use, public indecency, etc? That'd be a start.

sure. if we’re doing social media hot takes, this is valid.

but to his point, it’s not great. as a family man, Houston downtown isn’t exactly a great area to be.

I have no problem with the people who have become homeless insofar as their plight in life. I’ve done enough research to understand the situation beyond the baseless mindset of “lazy bums just don’t want to work”
That’s just not the case for the overwhelming majority. Some homeless actually do work. They have jobs cleaning, emptying trash etc in hopes that they can get back to normal life.

The issue in the US has been the drug epidemic largely brought on my the pharma industry and specifically the opiate pushers. People are ruined as a result. Thus they become homeless.

The problem I have is how cities are dealing with the issue. They’re inviting it into areas where they ought not be. It’s hugely disruptive.

Most cities have shelters either publically and/or privately funded but typically
The shelters won’t allow drugs /alcohol so that puts many on the street.

The issues is real and isn’t going away with a magic wand. The population needs to be culled naturally and it will.
That’ll take many years.

In the meantime, move them to areas that allows non homeless folks to be unbothered. Provide some basic necessities.
Kinda cold but that’s what I’d like to see happen.

Yup, it’s not great in downtown Houston these days

How's the Galleria district these days? Was always nice and 'posh'. I'm sure it's just a matter of time until the dregs take over that as well.

can’t speak to that. used to work in Greenway Plaza area down the road back in the late 2000’s and early 2010’s.

but now, being in the burb’s that area is just too much of a pain to get to with traffic. an hour drive to start, then traffic, then parking…….solid 1.5 hours to be there. hard pass unless it’s something we can’t live without

The idea that this is a Republican/Democrat issue is pure BS. Neither party has any idea or policy to solve or even reduce the problem. Neither party is even really studying the problem.

I don't think this is entirely true. While I don't believe any viable solution has been proposed, the democrats think they know how to solve the problem. Democrats think that the answer is just giving homeless people housing. Unfortunately, that doesn't address the root cause of why people become homeless. Give them a home, and then what? They'll continue doing the same thing, not contribute to society, and also destroy their new home.

Democrats also seem to think that if housing can't be provided, you should let them camp wherever and destroy green spaces, parks, or any open areas that are maintained by tax dollars.

The problem with these approaches is that any person addicted to drugs is perfectly fine with continuing their lifestyle if they can live in a tent, or are provided housing. There is zero incentive to change and better themselves because it is easier to just beg for drug money and sleep in a tent, than to get clean and work to earn money to support yourself.

I wish I knew what the solution was, but I know it isn't any of the above and will have to be some sort of incentive based system and tough love. There has to be consequences for breaking laws.
