Has there been a shift in support for law enforcement?

I have always been a back the blue kind of guy. Here lately, after a recent run in for a close family member, I can see myself drifting from what I once believed.

It's all about revenue, you're guilty until proven innocent, and there are a lot more officers with inflated egos and on power trips.

Let's hear it from you...

It's changed some where I live thanks to the Goon Squad.

I don't go out my way to antagonize LE and know some are damn good people.

It's also a position of power that some abuse.

And it's also part of a larger, corrupt system which does not have the freedom of citizens in mind, as was evident during Covid and even now.

So it's a mixed bag and context is important. Avoid antagonistic interactions with LE at all costs

I’m over the collect and serve mentality. There’s no shortage of them hunting you down to give you a ticket but when you actually need something they’re always an hour away. frick em.

I don’t really interact with police on even a yearly basis. I do with the general public.

They are far worse.

I can recognize being a cop can be a shite job. They aren’t pulling from the top of the chain. And they are put in situations where it really is you or the perp.

They have good cops, and shite cops. Like every profession. I don’t know a single profession that hasn’t had people abuse their position or have people frick up.

I’d probably become jaded and a dick if I had to deal with the public on that level every day.

BLM completely missed the boat with how they approached this issue. If they had pushed the fact police are more and more becoming revenue generators that trample on civil rights instead of making it a race thing we'd all be better off.

Calling cops in any situation would be a last resort

Proactive policing created a rift between community and police IMO.

Even driving around town you know theyre watching, waiting for one mistake to stop you, and start nosing around.

A close friend of mine was at a bar but wasn’t drinking, he went there just to play pool. A cop pulls him over shortly after he left and was very belligerent in accusing him of being drunk. He consented to a breathalyzer but the cop misheard him and started to put him in cuffs, yelling “I’m arresting you for DWI!!” Obviously he followed him from the bar, thinking it would be an easy one for his quota. He followed him for miles waiting for him to slip up and when he changed lanes without signaling, he stopped him. My friend was always a “back the blue” guy before that happened.

I agree. It’s an issue for everyone but some of them were loudly sprinkling in anti-white crap and it turned many people off. Like, the fact that openly using slurs against whites (they even made up some new ones like mayo jar and powder people lol) was accepted within the movement, along with destroying businesses of people who had nothing to do with it caused more problems than it helped.

Its more complicated than a simple yes or no in terms of supporting law enforcement.

I support the general idea of law enforcement, I think most people do, but I don't support those in law enforcement who abuse their authority.

You can't compare a small town officer to... an Austin Police Department officer (I say Austin because I know they have one of the best departments in the country).

There are a lot of dirty cops, but there are a lot of good ones as well. I don't think its smart to blindly say "I 100% support the police" or "I 100% hate the police".

Well there was widespread protests and rioting largely against police in several major cities back in 2020 in case you missed it. That was followed by a wave of anti police legislation and pro criminal policies. Since then crime has steadily risen in cities, imagine that.... and now people seem like they're ready for tougher policing so the cycle is coming back around.

Many of them were the type to be picked on in their younger years, and turn to police work for the gun and the badge and the feelings of power that come with it

It's especially true these days as most of the "good" cops have left the job and recruitment is scrapping the bottom of the barrel for qualified applicants.

they focus on harassing and generating revenue from law abiding citizens (get your inspection sticker, don’t let insurance lapse, pee in public while drunk and be arrested and register as a sec offender, don’t have some weed in your pocket or pay the price, etc)

meanwhile not allowed to proactively patrol and stop violent crimes, illegals can drive trucks with fake plates and no insurance and be let go with nothing, homeless people can shoot drugs and shite wherever they want and no repercussions because they won’t show up for court or have any consequences anyway

this causes such a breakdown of societal code and leads to feelings you have in the OP…we have less cops, the cops we do have are less qualified, and they have no support from either side because politicians and the media has turned minorities against them and law abiding citizens feel harassed and think it’s a double standard

we all lose and it’s a downward spiral that can’t be reversed IMO

It began with the militization of local police forces to combat the drug war in the 80’s. It really started with the LAPD creation of SWAT back in the mid 70’s. Transitioned away from neighborhood beat cops who got to know members of the local community and earned some level of trust with them.

So what ended up happening? The officer would have to give him the intoxilizer test at the jail unless your friend refused. Was there any body camera video?
