live in a very rural area. The rural areas have long been the bane of AT&T higher ups for quite sometime and the cable in rural areas have been seriously neglected as a result.
I'm not even in a "very rural area". I can throw a rock and hit the city limits of two of the fastest growing cities in the state.
They could literally come another 2 miles, tops, from either of two directions and have fiber here with very little time invested. It would probably be cheaper for the company to do that than continue to use seemingly incompetent labor (techs brought in from multiple states, of the four I mentioned earlier one was from North Carolina and the other was from Virginia) to patch or otherwise cobble together their antiquated system.
When I say that I haven't dealt with a single employee that seems to care at all about the customer in the past decade or more, I mean it. That comes from leadership and the standard of service they allow. That lack of care seems to have started at the top and has finally eaten away at the entire company.
The most concerning part doesn't even have to do with AT&T, but other companies that have followed their model. I have family member who spent a career in the propane sales business. The company she ended up working for after several buyouts announced they were going to "The AT&T model". My family member was 1.5 years from retirement, and they cut her job and many others in favor of national call centers and no walk-in offices, despite the fact that the majority of their customers were rural elderly people who have no desire to do business that way.

I have att uverse, Directv, and my cell phone and wife’s all att… absolutely no problems… now I will say this customer service is absolute crap .. I would even go to say att is in the top 3 for worst customer service, but that’s nothing new been the same shite customer service for many many many years

Also, when was AT&T particularly good?
Back when it was really AT&T, and not a Baby Bell wearing ATT's skin.

This is the root of it. The problem stems from zero competition. The overwhelming majority has a max of two options and alot of people just get one. The whole who sucks more debate is a matter of experiences and varies case to case because they all suck. Personally I've had absolutely unacceptable experiences with Cox compared to ATT. ATT still sucks but it's been painless in comparison.
Cox never even came and buried the frickin wire

I retired from AT&T after 43 years. I had decent jobs that were sometimes really rewarding and satisfying and paid well with BellSouth. But, I did notice beginning with the AT&T purchase of BellSouth that AT&T did not consider its employees nor it’s customer base as being family and friends. They seem to be driven by making a quick buck, not giving a shite about customer service, and much more worried about keeping their heel on the necks of their employees.
I stayed with them after the Bellsouth purchase because the salary was great and the annual bonuses were stout. Glad I left when I did.

I moved my office and did the transfer online. Tech called and said to just hook up my modem at the new site to any phone outlet and it would work. No luck. Finally got a tech in a truck to come out and he laughed saying they didn't even have service on that side of town. That was after hours and hours on tech support calls. AT&T is asshoe.

Look, everyone, the problem shows up to defend the problem.
You're here in four pages of people trashing ATT for their crap service with nobody else singing their praises. If you weren't part of the problem, maybe you wouldn't be the only one defending ATT. How much money do you stand to lose if ATT stock goes down a point?

Alright, my tech today just left. I did talk to him briefly. After troubleshooting for about 30 minutes he determined that he can't fix the problem because it is, "On the main line." Another tech may come out today or in the morning to tell me that they can't fix it....I mean to fix it.
The question I have is that I have two neighbors with AT&T internet. Both are serviced by the same main line that we are, yet they have full service, and we don't. How is that?
This is the third or fourth time over the past couple years that either I or the neighbors have gotten the "It is the mainline...." explanation.

Telephone cable is different than cable tv cable. Inside of a telephone cable there are cable pairs. Depending on the size of the main cable there could be 25 pair or 1800 pairs or more. Usually on a distribution cable there’s somewhere between 25 to 100 pairs in a cable. Each customer gets a dedicated pair.
All kinds of things can happen to cables like animals nesting, bullets, weather, lighting all can lead to moisture getting into the cable and causing corrosion. It doesn’t all happen at one time therefore some customers will go out before others. If not taken care of your neighbors will eventually go out too. Here’s where the mismanagement occurs. Instead of allowing the techs to fix the problem before it’s a full on dumpster fire the tech are told to temp fix it and move on to next job and “we’ll get to it another day”! Well after years of “we’ll get it another day” the whole infrastructure of copper cable has gone to shite.
They’re now overlaying the copper cables with fiber and things will be better for the most part but fiber has its issues with crap electronics and the company going cheap.

Depends on where you are. I switched during a hissy fit I had with ATT 2 years ago and it was a horrible move that didn’t even last 6 months.

AT&T is all bells and whistles with its promotions because the product is absolute shite.
Just switch to Verizon and actually have reliable service for once.

AT&T is the single worst company on the planet in regards to customer service.
Something may be going wrong on top of that, but that was enough for me to bail on them a few years ago. frick AT&T
