It is a shame that so many people do this.

What makes people do this? Are they looking for free handouts or is it people who wanted to be in the military but for whatever reason couldn't get in so they pretend they were in the military?

The people that do this are either a)scammers or b)mentally ill. Never seen it in person myself but I'd probably just keep it moving unless I'm certain that they're scamming.

I believe it’s mentally ill people do that we’re too afraid to join the military but want the trashy chicks that like a man in uniform. If that was the case though, I feel like there would be way more prevalent at a twin peaks or one of those indoor trampoline places

I did Christmas Eve at the airport in Gulfport. Normally I just let it ride but when someone came up and thanked him for his service I politely told the individuals he didn’t serve so no thanks were needed for this guy. What really pissed me off is it’s like he didn’t even try. If your gonna fake it put forth the effort don’t look like a soup sandwich. Shits embarrassing.

I was in Leesville recently, (at a pub after work)!and these two guys were discussing their careers. Basically comparing what they did, guns they shot, where they stationed. One thought the other guy was lying and kept calling “stolen valor”.
I felt sorry for both of them.

No, especially since I did not serve. I feel it would be a douche move for someone that did not serve to call someone out for stolen valor, as I feel that person would be on the cusp of the same thing by trying to be a hardo. Besides, I wouldn’t really know what to look for to tell if someone's story was bullshite, anyway...

I have a friend who is a former army vet. He’s an overall nice guy but he wrote this long blog post a few years ago that always sticks with me-

Basically, he was at a baseball game and was upset that a civilian was wearing a marines hat, when the man had never served (and also immediately admitted he never served and just wore it to wear it- so it’s not a stolen valor situation). Anyway, the vet was a huge douche bag about it and argued with the guy to take it off. One thing led to another and the vet then took this guys phone and threw it off the balcony towards the field.

This was all written from the vet’s perspective and he still came off like the giant douche bag in the situation. It was an interesting read in the sense that I kept saying “holy shite, you’re an a-hole”, while reading it.

LINK to blog if anyone is interested

cmon man.
Have to show a military ID to board early. That’s literally the only benefit.

My dad was a Naval Officer during the Korean War but never ever wore anything service related after he returned home. 50 years later, his grandson is in Navy special forces and gives my dad a cap. My dad is proud that his grandson gave him the cap and wears it. After just one person thanked my dad for his service, he took the cap off and never wore it again.

The weird hero worship society gives the military and to a lesser degree police and firefighters causes weirdos to live out fantasies.

Once when I was bartending I had a guy run out of cash and start asking if I could help out a vet. Talking about Nam and how they sent him into Cambodia on secret missions he's not supposed to talk about. I just said, "well, then you probably shouldn't talk about them."

Guess he forgot I had carded him earlier in the evening and knew how old he was.

I never have, but my brother is an ex SEAL and gets called all the time about people being possible fake SEALs. Folks, if you're gonna be fake military, SEALs are the wrong ones to try. It doesn't matter if you get a tattoo. It doesn't matter if you're the greatest SEAL historian ever and can come up with a great story. The Master Chief at the Seal Museum has a full listing of everyone that ever wore the Trident as well as UDT and all the real Seals can call him or submit your dumb arse on the website and next thing you know you've got a real Seal calling you out. Possibly a lot of them if you don't recant and get rid of that persona as fast as you can.

Brother's best story was when a police department wanted him to check out a guy who was claiming it as an applicant to be a cop. Had a tat. Played it up bigtime. He wasn't. And the way he found out he was busted was when the PD called him in for an interview and my brother was there across the table to correct his life's trajectory once he walked out the room. He looks at these people as kinda sad and almost pities them. Other Seals are not so charitable and there are horror stories of tattoos being removed and whatnot on the spot.

Don't do it kids. Ain't worth it.

I honestly dont like wearing my Uniform in public because I dont want the attention nor anyone buying me stuff.

I respect the appreciation, just doesn't set right with me like it did when I was in my 20s deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.

I cringed reading this

Seems almost impossible to fake being a seal anyway. It’s too easy to know you are faking it because every real SEAL has already written a book about everything they did
