When I travel, I tell people I might be from Miquelon.
Not a great compromise, admittedly.

I’m going to Iceland in a few weeks and I don’t plan on changing anything about myself to appease foreigners. They sure don’t change for us…

Tell them you're Irish.
They never won a war. They don't scare anyone.

My last post was written while watching "Hillbilly Elegy". Name another place where someone can do what JD Vance has done, and where he's on the cusp of being??!! As many mistakes as OUR country has made, at the end of the day, we are way ahead in the way of positive impact. Why the Hell does everyone on this frickING planet want to come here? That questions should answer a whole lot of questions!
As far as me, I proudly tell people where I'm from and get a "War Eagle" wherever I wear my Auburn gear. Never, EVER, be ashamed of where you are from.

I’ve never really considered it but the family is going to Europe this Spring and my daughter is insisting we just tell everyone we’re from Canada… she thinks it’ll get us treated better for some reason? I’ve been out of the country several times but have never really thought of this.
Thats dumb. Europeans are actually intrigued by Americans. The only people that would treat you badly are the ones that you wouldnt want to deal with anyway

That sounds like a questionable idea. However, I have hidden my nationality abroad once, for about a week.
I was in Marrakech, Morocco, traveling with a Norwegian guy and two Germans. I didn’t really know these guys. We all got kicked off the same train in Spain (a different story), so in the train station in Barcelona we decided to go to Morocco.
We had been there for about a week. One night we were in a cafe with a TV in the corner, and the TV showed bodies and wreckage in the water, and we didn’t know what it was. Of course, a cafe in Marrakech at night was all Muslim men and a table of westerners (us). When we got back to the hotel in the Medina, the desk guy stopped us coming back and gave me my passport and advised me not to let anyone know i was an American. He also said we had to leave the next day. All night there was shouting in the streets and the calls to prayer were loud, and crowds of men on the street all night, but we couldn’t figure out what happened, and it was getting really tense.
What had happened was that the USS Vincennes had shot down a passenger airbus over the Persian Gulf. The bodies and wreckage that we saw on TV in the cafe were Iranians. It was a huge f*uck up and the Islamic world was going bonkers that night. The hotel didn’t want an American passport behind the desk.
The dude from Norway had a small flag in his bag. He pinned it to the outside of his pack so that we were identified as Norwegian. We left the next day and took the train to Casablanca, Rabat, and then to Tangier, where we got on the ferry to Algeciras, Spain, across the Strait of Gibraltar. So I was kind of smuggled out of Morocco passing as Norwegian. It was necessary at the time.
But for general travel, don’t try to pass as Canadian. Just be Americans. Don’t be a dick and everything will be ok.

Serious question kind of off topic. My international travel has been limited to North America thus far. From my understanding blacks do get treated worse initially in a lot of places than white Americans, then become just another cash grab when found out to be American. Is there a different view of black Americans traveling abroad?
From personal experience, I don't know what it means to be white

I'm not black so no idea. But generally speaking nobody gives a frick about you. They are just wanting to go about their day.

I was in Europe for some months while Bush was president. All you heard was bashing Bush when they found out you were American. I can only imagine what they would say to you now that we have Trump 2.0 in and what he is doing. And admit you voted for Trump too? Lord look out!

The thing is it won't work anyway, unless you at least have an upper Midwest accent and know what a Chesterfield is you won't have a shot at pretending to be a Canadian especially when dealing with people in the hospitality industry in larger cities.
This comes up from time to time but I always liken it to Hawaii. They tend to have a dislike for haoles but I have never had them be anything but nice to my face. Just learn and commit the cultural faux pas of the countries you will vist to memory and don't act like an entitled arse and the vacation will be smooth.
