Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has officially been named the busiest airport in the world for the second year in a row.
OAG's annual ranking of major airports again has ATL in the top spot after it handled 62.7 million seats in 2024. The aviation analytics firm specifies that it bases its rankings on capacity airlines scheduled through the airports on the list, not the exact number of passengers who flew.
Four of the top ten busiest global airports were in the U.S. last year, with Dallas/Fort Worth at number five, Denver at number six, and Chicago-O'Hare at number 10.
1.Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International (ATL)
2.Dubai International (DXB)
3.Tokyo International - Haneda (HND)
4.London Heathrow (LHR)
5.Dallas Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW)
6.Denver International (DEN)
7.Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN)
8.Istanbul (IST)
9.Shanghai Pudong International (PVG)
10.Chicago O'Hare International (ORD)
“Atlanta’s continued global leadership reflects the airport’s strength as a major connecting hub for both domestic and international capacity, supported by a strong set of base airlines," OAG’s Chief Analyst, John Grant, said in a statement. "Recent developments in both Dallas/Fort Worth and Denver highlight the competitive nature of the market in the United States which results in choices for the connecting traveler market.”
According to OAG, Atlanta saw 2% more capacity in 2024 than the year prior, and all 10 of the busiest global airports saw growth last year.
Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver and Chicago all saw capacity up by 5-9%.

not exactly news, and hasn't been for decades, always among the "busiest," who gaf?

Aside from a couple of outlier years, yeah it's held the title for the better part of the last 3 decades

I actually like the layout there, it makes sense.
Freaked out when I realized I had to get from Terminal A to terminal J in like 30 minutes, but the tram makes it super easy

Surprised O'Hare is that low.

I remember the first time I flew. I had a connecting flight in Atlanta. Young dude and nervous about everything.
Well I didn’t know that checked baggage went on the next flight with you automatically, so I went through the gates out to where the luggage was, thinking I needed to grab it and bring it back for the second flight
Had to go back through full security and everything.
Dear God I barely made it back on the flight. Really was my dumbest moment ever, but those are what make funny memories

It's one of the best layouts there is. Easy to navigate and you can be at baggage claim from the gate in 10 minutes.
DFW's layout OTOH, can SMD.

It's not even close imo

I'm actually surprised Denver is that high on the list, didn't realize it was that busy. I say this as I'm flying there next week

you can get from any terminal in DFW, lap all of the terminals, and then pick your terminal faster than you can at ATL, not saying the ATL setup is bad

Just dropping in to say Charlotte has the worst airport in the states. Imitation Atlanta and can’t handle all the traffic.

ATL+Delaylta= Sprintsfield-Jackson. More miles have been run through that airport than any other in the world.

My favorite mall, great food court.

DFW always feels so much more crowded to me than ATL does. Not sure why that is, as both are massive.
