She said it so matter-of-fact that it hardly registered--just a passing comment in conversation. Then, I went outside and counted 14 bullet holes in the home's siding. Thugs had sprayed the house from a car on the street. Apparently no one injured, but it was unnerving to be looking at daylight through the holes while working inside.

I worked in a trauma center where every December several of us would pick a date from the next years calendar guessing when someone would stab their brother fighting over the last piece of fried chicken.
I won once, closest to the date.
