My old man was there from day 1.
Pretty much refused to talk about it ever. He was an artillery officer. Started as a second lieutenant and left the island a captain.
If I asked questions he would put a book in my hand. Either a history of the 1st Marine Division or Sledges book “with the Old Breed”.
There are days when I’d give anything to sit down and talk to the old man for a couple of hours

I enjoyed the entire pacific theater week by week series they put out. This is that series but with just the Guadalcanal focus pull out

Most of their episodes were a little over 20 minutes long. Perfect for my ride into work.

Watched the Kings and Generals coverage of the Japanese invasion of Korea in the 1500's today. There is a pretty good movie out on the most famous Korean admiral who beat the Japanese fleet called Hansan: Rising Dragon. The one on Amazon Prime is dubbed to English.

Saw the movie before, but it's much better knowing the history.

Same with my grandfather…he refused to say one word about it.

He did go on to have a meaningful career after that, but he did have mental health struggles because of it for the rest of his life.

Seth Paridon was an historian with the World War II museum doing over 1500 oral histories.

Also for those of you who really want to do a deep dive here is a link to the Nimitz Gray Book Nimitz Grey Book Its 8 volumes of the daily assessment and order of battle in the Pacific Theater of operations starting in December 1941 and running to the end of the war.

Just finished the entire series of these and most are very good. Deals with what if’s alt history type scenarios.
