Grandfather Clocks

Seems like everyone over a certain age use to have / want a grandfather clock. Both my parents have one. Everyone that retired from my company through the 1990’s would choose one as a retirement gift. Do you think they will become one of those retro cool things to own again? Cuckoo clocks are another type of clock that use to be popular. My mom has one of those too. Something is either always chiming or cuckoo’ing when I’m over here.

Lol funny you mention grandfather clocks.. last night I was watching an episode of the old Bob Newhart Show on one of the retro channels, and at one point they were rolling this huge grandfather clock into their apartment and trying to figure out where to put it.. and I thought to myself, holy shite it's been years since ive even thought about grandfather clocks, I kinda forgot they even existed .
I think they're pretty cool though .

Waste of space. Right up there with all the empty baskets on people’s shelves and barn doors to get to your bedroom. We are a long way from a recession.

I think the entire inventory of grandfather clocks all originally passed through The Price Is Right.
After TPIR quit giving them away, you never saw any more new ones.

It's a shame, but hardly anyone around that knows how to fix them.

That's the larger issue.
The soon to be FIL and MIL have four grandfather clocks that they intend to give to the kids/grandkids in their will. They've had issues in the last 5 years trying to consistently find someone to work on them when the gentlemen they used for 40 years retired.
We'll have room for one, but I know some of the other kids/grandkids won't.

We have some older clocks in the house and we don’t even have them running right now. Nobody is looking to these clocks anymore for the time so nobody ever notices they’re showing the wrong time.
But they’re beautiful and family heirlooms so I enjoy having them out.

I have one that my grandfather made sitting in my den. I also have a freestanding cone fireplace and some nice terrazzo tile floor. It’s my private portal to a different era.

I have one of each.
The cuckoo clock my dad sent back home when he was stationed in Germany in 1952/1953. It is an authentic black forest clock called The Hunter. We tried to have it serviced in the 80s and we believe that the repair shop swapped out parts because it never really worked right again. There is one on eBay listed for $1000
The grandfather clock is an Emperor kit that my parents bought in the 60s. When mom had to move in with us about 9 years ago we brought the clock to our house, but I have never been able to get it case level and keep it running.

I received the one my dad bought my mom in the early 90s when she passed. It needs to be worked on and isn't a fancy one, but I keep it in my office as a memento.

There’s a mom and pop store in Slidell that sells grandfather and cukoo clocks, and services. I love looking around when I go in there to buy a knew knife (lots of those too, kitchen and recreational).

I still like both grandfather clocks anc cuckoo clocke, but I just like things that are traditional as well as mechanical.
Honestly, I think traditional clocks are going the way of cursive writing, though. I don’t think people 50 years from now will even know how to read a clock that is not digital.
