We have a chiming mantle clock, a chiming grandfather clock, and a cuckoo clock that we don't run. It is a noisy affair at noon and midnight but we don't pay attention to them anymore.

When my son moved in from his mother's house, his headboard was on the other side of the wall from the very loud grandfather.

He complained about all the clanging and banging in the house for the first month after he moved in. Maybe they were helpful in his decision to find his own apartment later on.

What do grandfather clocks have to do with a recession?

Most people that have them, it’s likely a family heirloom.

And for those that may want to buy one, they are cheap.

I have the one my father built from a kit from Emperor Clock Company in Foley, AL. The metal clip that holds the pendulum to regulate the gear mechanism has a small crack in it that prevents the entire thing from working properly though. Unfortunately, Emperor Clocks has long since disappeared from active businesses so it's been proving difficult to find the part I need to get it running again.

But yeah... These were really popular in the 1960s and 70s, and even up into the 90s with some folks.

Do you think they will become one of those retro cool things to own again?

Problem is the folks that keep em working are dying off.
