This board hates the concept of pedestrian friendly zones.
People who never ever go to the French Quarter FREAKED at the very mention of making it more pedestrian friendly.
That's because America is for CARS! Walking is for gay libs and Europeans, we don't do that sissy shite here

They'll need to add street parking and some bigger sidewalks in a few places for that to work.
You can't have surface parking and still be walkable. And you can't be walkable if the sidewalks are 4' away from cars buzzing by at 45mph. And you can't get rid of surface parking lots if there's no street parking.
If they wanted it to be like Magazine street, they'd have told the bike lane advocates to f-ck off and build a two lane street with street parking in at least some sections.

You need to edit the falsehood out of the thread title.

Did they take inflation into account?? I bet they didn't so they could sunshine pump the narrative.
or the number of businesses now compared to 2016

Sales tax revenue at businesses along Government Street was up 34% between 2016 and 2022,
So in six years including a pandemic year sales tax collections along Government Street increased 34% or an average of almost 6 percent per year.
quote:
Citywide sales tax revenues rose by 27% over the same period.
That’s an increase of almost five per cent per year.
Government Street was doing better than the rest of the city before the road diet.
quote:
Through May, Government Street businesses had collected 44% of the sales tax revenues from 2022, compared to a 40% collection from citywide businesses.
In five months Government Street sales taxes are 44% of what they were in 2022. Five months equals 41.6% of a year. Consequently Government Street sales taxes of 44% of 2022 is a 2.4% gain over the previous year.
The numbers provided Government Street sales taxes were increasing at a faster right prior to the road diet than it is now.

Meanwhile, all the other surface streets and interstates are inundated with stop and go traffic.
North and Florida, which are the main 2 alternatives to Government, aren't bad.

I drive Government everyday. Afternoon traffic is horrible.
The number of buildings that are vacant and for sale continues to climb. Tax revenues may have increased some but let's see if it is sustainable.
I doubt the change in the street had much impact on those tax revenues.

Can’t click link but are revenue growth numbers adjusted for inflation or just raw?

They don't adjust our national GDP by inflation.....that would be depressing.
So what do you think about these numbers from Government Street?

Ah...so you are saying Government Street's resurgence was already underway when they changed the format of the street?
You are probably right.

That’s what THEIR numbers say, I just analyzed them. They were mixing apples and oranges. Saying taxes were 44% of what they were in 41.6% of the time doesn’t sound as good if it’s 44% already.
ETA comments from BR Business Report
quote:
Sales tax revenue growth from businesses along Government has been outpacing the city’s overall growth since 2017, and that trend has continued following the project’s completion. During the first five months of 2023, Government Street businesses had collected about 44% of 2022 sales tax revenue, while revenue in the city overall was at about 40%.
They saw it as I did.

You are optimistic if you think that project starts in the next 4 years.
Technically, it's already started, however the work underway now is mostly off of I-10.

the improvement to government st. is like casting pearls before swine.
i have lived within a block of government st. (capital heights and goodwood, still own in both and live in capital heights) since 1979. Serops moved from its location where Lacarreta is now because they did not expect to be able to bring people in for dinner.
The changes to government st. resulted in bars and restaurants staying busy in the evenings, with many coming on foot. Anyone who doesn't think the neighborhoods adjacent to government st. are generally better places to live than they were 20 years ago is full of shite.
yes murders are up baton rouge, not necessarily government st., and i will be bold and say that traffic calming measures on government st. did nothing to cause increase in murder rates.

North Blvd starts at Foster.
If you can’t get TO Foster, such as coming up Jefferson and turning left or either Claycut or Capitol Heights not being accessible to westbound traffic, that’s a big fricking issue.
Getting to Florida from that same area is also a problem because Rebel Dr goes straight through BRCC and has no left turn at Florida.

The improved situation along Government Street did begin years ago before the road diet.
The thing is Government use to be a big deal back in the 60s and 70s.
You had Bob & Jake’s, Westmoreland Shopping Center with Rosenfield’s, Piccadilly, Andrew’s, and Morgan & Lindsey’s. There was a movie house just East of BRHS. There were barber shops, grocery stores, restaurants, etc.
You had Phil’s, Giamanco’s, the Rebel Drive In on the eastern end.
But that faded only to see a welcome resurgence start about a decade ago.

Show me number of transactions. This could very easily be explained by inflation

We hate this one because it isn't used, doesn't connect to anything, and makes traffic worse.

There is no shade and walking/riding on government is hot as frick 9 months out of the year.
I ride my bike down Government fairly regularly and this is totally accurate. It is much more comfortable, safer and almost as fast to take Claycut & Capital Heights through the diet zone.
