I like the fake it on the resume idea. If the company ever finds out, just tell them there's free Ivy League classes online why would I pay to go to a school and that it was a stupid self-imposed obstacle to this job that obviously had no predictive power for success. Then knock the coffee out of his hand and walk out.

I don't know how you read that and get offended as an engineer. All I was saying is there are interesting high tech jobs for blue collar types. Are all engineers this touchy or are you having your mansies?

What kind of math is this? $49,263 per year at $20.15/hr is 2445 hours worked. There are 2088 working hours in 2015 assuming 8 hours per day and no holidays/vacation. If you're including overtime in the average annual salary then you should adjust the average hourly wage appropriately. Either way, I'd like a link to the original information if you have one.

Can you buy a $500k home, drive two BMWs, and send you kids to Country Day for $5833/month? No, of course not.
However, if you can't live as a family of 4 in New Orleans on $5,833 net you're bad with money.

If half of that went to you're mortgage and escrow, you could afford a 400k house and still have $2900 to go around for the month.
I'm not sure why this is even a debate to be quite frank. You can live in New Orleans as a family of 4 on $100k/year gross.
I don't give a shite if you can't own nice vehicles and/or send your kids to private school - those aren't pillars of being able to live.

Plumber came to my house today. Replaced a gas line. He made the line up on his truck, did a bit of digging, removed old line, replaced new line filled hole back up.
About 2 hours maybe a little less. $271.00 labor and material and worth every penny.

The post to which I replied was one that insinuated it was comical to try and live in New Orleans as a family of 4 off of $100k/year.
I've proven that there is more than enough take home pay after traditional deductions and retirement savings to do just that. If you want to argue that you can't live in the Garden District while sending your two kids to Newman for $100k/year, then I would agree, but that wasn't the original premise.
These type of threads highlight the difference between wants and needs. Is $100k enough to give you and your family everything you want in New Orleans? No, but it sure as hell can get you everything you need.

If you want your kids to live, you send them to private school here.
Public school isn't a viable option.
