No one is going to starve off of 100k, but it isn't enough to be "comfortable" while owning a house and having kids living IN New Orleans. Of course you can swing it if you live in a suburb.

This whole conversation started when someone said, "people don't know how much 100k is.", acting as if 100k was an obscene amount of money. 100k doesn't go very far if you live in a city.

About 2 hours maybe a little less. $271.00 labor and material and worth every penny.

Liar. There's proof on this very board they make $20/hr.

Or thats what some on this board say anyway.

What's the alternative?

Get a job
Learn a skill
Start your own business?

I know a lot of financially well off people that didn't attend college. Most are either oil field or started their own business.

To be fair a good friend is an executive at GS. Graduated from SUNY Albany, then Fordham MBA once he was already at GS.

It isn't all Ivy League grads.

Good story, and gives a little hope. But, I mean, was he entry level UNTIL he got the Fordham degree? Was he from middle or lower class and then did he work his way up into leadership at GS?

He started entry level, worked up to a mid level position, then after MBA became an executive.

He's also extremely smart and very understated about both his wealth and intelligence. Zero attitude at all. If you talked to him you'd never believe his net worth.

I am of the belief that name of college matters way less than the actual education you received there.

I am an estimator, we deal in man-hours and cost. The average worker starts at 10-15. Most Journeymen will get 20-30, some make more. Welders are now up to 36-38. There has been a major escalation in wages caused by the lack of truly skilled labor. We bid jobs with automatic overtime and per diem, just to get the guys to apply. Many will take less but expect consistent employment benefits, etc. Some will leave for a dollar more, but don't understand the cost to switch jobs, downtime, etc they will make less.

Welders make more than everyone. Electricians are more cerebral but make less because usually are sub-contractors under a main piping contractor. Depending on the Job, mostly Foreman, Supervision, etc will make 40 or more.
