That's exactly what I thought. It was a job for the Georgia port authority so I assume it's something about repairing ships/docks. They must be so packaged together that it isn't as bad as it looks.

I would tell anyone your chances of success are greatly enhanced w/ a degree.
Facts bear this out, even beyond the expected lifetime earnings.
Back when the unemployment rate was 8%, among those w/ a four year degree, the rate was something like half that. With an advanced degree, the rate was like 2% and I think one of those was Placebeaux's cousin-in-law.

Currently for profit technical schools are really expensive and you are often in debt when you are done. As far as state run technical schools, I would imagine it's not very far off where these are going to be expensive as well.

I think state supported technical schools are the best value for higher education today unless you want to be a doctor/engineer/anything that requires graduate work.

Don't act as if going to college wasn't pushed on them by previous generations. It's the whole reason why were in this "college bubble" mess as it is. Children follow the guidance of their parents, usually; don't blame the kids.

I have a career thanks to this system. I almost went into one of the for profit schools, and thankfully I got some great advice, and common sense. Everyone I talk to I advise them to do this over college. Unless its for the fields you mentioned.

I would almost guarantee you if you were an exceptional quant/programmer without a degree they would pay you handsomely. If you can make them money, there are no barriers to entry.

It's still mostly true for higher white collar positions. The problem is universities have inflated the costs of education so much that it doesn't represent the true economic value of the degree in the working world. The ROI is basically shite.
