There was also an old restaurant/Inn near Gettysburg. Doobins House, that I don't remember what I ate but I remember it was good.
They have a great open-face Reuben there.

If I can make a suggestion: read The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara and then go to the battlefield. I live about an hour from Gettysburg and re-read the book before I went. It's a historical novel about the battle and it's essential context for what you're looking at when you're there. A different choice here or there, slightly different timing of actions here or there and the Confederates win Gettysburg and the whole tenor of the war changes. It was an inflection point in American (and world) history.

but Mt Vernon is a great day trip from DC.
Its going through a major restoration right now, so it may not be worth visiting

Even if you're not into history...Gettysburg is a nice little town, the scenery is pretty, and the drive is nice.

Don't they still occasionally find bodies?
If you like that kind of thing you have to do it
I think it is nicer then Vicksburg for point of reference

Just did Gettysburg around Easter. I would highly suggest hiring a 3 hour tour guide, its around a hundred bucks. You will get the full tour and understand just what went on while you are looking at it. You can book them through the park. Our guide was Dean Harry, he was fantastic.

Why not Manassas? It's WAY closer to DC.
But if you do decide to go to Gettysburg, you'll pass Harpers Ferry and Antietam along the way.
And if your interested in Gettysburg, look up Matt Atkinson on Youtube. He's a Mississippi boy and his knowledge of the Civil War is fantastic. He's still a NPS Ranger at GNMP.

Start with the light show that will show you who did what and when.
Then hire a park ranger to ride around with you. You could do that years ago when I went. The ranger will be able to tell you everything that happened.
It is well worth a day trip.

If you have time, Mount Vernon (George Washington home) and Harpers Ferry (in West Virginia but a few hours from the District) are worthwhile visits too.

Don't know about Gettysburg, but Mt. Vernon was pretty cool.
Being a veteran, I was chosen by the docent to read a letter by George Washington in front of the tour group outside George and Martha's tomb.
I was deeply honored.
At the time, they were painting, installing new carpet in portions of the house and doing an archeological dig in the slave section of the cemetery.

Gettysburg is ABSOLUTELY worth it. I ended up there for business and got to visit. I took my family there shortly thereafter.
It's unlike anywhere I've been due to the scale and monument placement for each of the units.
It's a really good experience, you won't regret it.

It's worth it if you're into history at all. Be aware that it does get pretty busy at times. If you're into presidents, go to the Eisenhower Farm up there. We've been twice in the last 15-20 years and really enjoyed it both times.

That's an awfully long time to think about Gettysburg.

Yeah absolutely go check it out.

The Electric Map is no longer at Gettysburg. The park sold it at auction back in 2012. It presently resides in Hanover.

There is also the National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, VA just south of Dulles airport west of DC.
Went years ago with my young kids at the time and they loved it.

I have visited Gettysburg several times over the years and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone remotely interested in the Civil War. It is hallowed ground.
Exactly. As a TN native, Shiloh is a must see as well. Seeing both of those will always be memorable.

This is a great suggestion. We went a couple of times when I was in HS and my dad was at the Army War College in Carlisle PA. What makes Gettysburg so special is to be able to contextualize what you’re seeing around the battlefield and the times that things were going down leading up to Pickett’s charge. It’s definitely hallowed ground.

Gettysburg is on my bucket list but no way I could do it in one day. Williamsburg was very cool. Also Jamestown.
