This guy needs to do his homework. The NASA administrator went to 870 miles on Polaris Dawn less than two years ago.

The only reason we are doing this now, and haven't been back in 50 years, is because China will send men back to the surface in the coming years. It's all about resources and having a base to explore further into space.
The reason we went in the first place was because of the USSR.
China is surpassing us in the space race because our leaders are too worried about oil and making themselves rich.

The blue check has always been the dumbass marker

It absolutely is. There hasn’t been a gasoline refinery built in over 30 years.
We have all the oil we need right in the US. We don’t have the refining capacity to drive prices down
Doubling down on ignorance I see.
ETA: Operable crude distillation capacity has increased by over 3 million barrels per day since the mid-90’s, and utilization (crude throughput as a percentage of operable capacity) has actually decreased since the mid-90’s. Meanwhile, the US is a net exporter of refined products but a net importer of crude oil. Lack of refining capacity isn’t a problem.

The amount of ignorance here is rather impressive.

I love how “China’s trying to put a human on the moon 60 years after we did it” turns into “China is beating us!”

Does China have a manned rocket heading toward the moon right now that I don’t know about?

No, but it's almost ready. It's being built by Yang Wei's team.
Posted on 4/2/26 at 8:18 am to Centinel
So how exactly does that mean they’re “surpassing” SpaceX and NASA?
I’m just curious. Because the “almost ready” comment has me confused.

No worries. The pilot will be Sum Ting Wong with co-pilot Wei Tu Lo.

$4.00 gas is a bigger issue than sending anyone to the moon.
NASA's budget is a drop in the bucket, less than half a percent of spending. It is an extremely cheap way to buy science, tech, industrial capacity, prestige, inspiration, etc. frick, just the national security implications of being left behind in the space race could easily justify a huge increase in NASA spending.

"If you can orbit something, you can deorbit something."
A bit dated now, but still sums this up nicely. Assuming you can think beyond first order effects.

STFU and get out of this thread. This thread is for cheering on the smart nerds and brass-balled astronauts (woman included) making this happen while you sit there jerking off to granny diaper porn.

This is oddly specific.

It’s actually less than that. It’s a 1/4th of 1% of discretionary spending.
Posted on 4/2/26 at 9:20 am to Rouxdee
That won't even keep a Learing Center open for two weeks.

Well yeah partially - if we are the first to build a base on the moon -> which will inevitably lead to a lunar launch facility for activities further out in the solar system.
Whoever is first to establish those will almost certainly corner the market entirely and have control of who is able to come and go. That means charging enormous costs to other nations to use while ensuring they have 1st dibs on resources.
That HAS to be the US

This exactly. People think we are just landing and walking around for fun on the moon this time. Looking into our goals for these
Missions and it’s far beyond that. We have to be the first to set up on the moon. Imagine China there first. It’s a big deal and I cannot understand why people would be against it.

100%
Really this is the case for all science agencies.

Seriously doubt a country will be able to take control of the moon. Doesn't even happen on Earth (Antarctica).
